CHICO– The SF State Gators ended their regular season this afternoon with a 3-0 loss at Chico State. With the loss, the Gators finish with a 8-7-3 overall record and a 4-5-3 record in the CCAA. Chico State heads into the six-team CCAA Soccer Championship Tournament with a 12-4-2 overall record including a 8-3-1 conference record.
If the Gators would have won this afternoon, they would have kept their hopes alive for a berth in the CCAA Soccer Championship Tournament berth. The sixth and final spot is between Stanislaus State and Humboldt State. If Stanislaus State defeats Cal State Dominguez Hills this afternoon at 4:30pm in Turlock, the Warriors will clinch the final spot. If the Toros defeat Stanislaus State, Humboldt State clinches the final spot.
The two seeds who will receive a first round bye this Tuesday, November 3 are Sonoma State and Chico State. Cal State L.A. and UC San Diego are the second and third seeds and will host Cal Poly Pomona and either Humboldt State or Stanislaus State in the First Round this Tuesday. The semi-finals and final will be held next Friday and Sunday, November 6 and 8 at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Gators outshot their hosts 9-6 including 4-1 in the second half, but the Wildcats held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal. Chico State also had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Karin Nordin and Mackenzie Boulton each had one save in goal for their respective teams.
Erin Woods connected on her third goal of the season in the 10
th minute off a ball from Ella Fries to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
SF State had a chance to tie the match in the 14
th minute, but
Laura Shea's shot sailed wide. Two minutes later,
Vanessa Penuna had a chance to tie the match for the visitors, but the ball sailed high over the goal.
The match remained 1-0 Chico State until the 32
nd minute when Pooja Patel connected on a ball from Lindsay Dias and Erin Woods to increase the Wildcats' lead to 2-0. This was Patel's ninth goal of the season. Penuna had a chance to cut the deficit in half, but her shot attempt sailed wide as Chico State took a 2-0 lead into the second half.
It looked like in the 48
th minute that the Gators were going cut in the Wildcat lead, but
Kimber Lohman's shot was stopped by the Wildcats' goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, Dias sealed the match for the Wildcats as she connected on a cross from Brooke Coehlo to increase their lead to 3-0.
SF State had two chances to cut into the Wildcat lead late in the match, but
Laura Shea and
Hanna Ghamari's shot attempts sailed high as the Wildcats took the 3-0 regular season finale.
