SAN FRANCISCO– For their second consecutive match, the SF State Gators played to a scoreless draw in a conference match at home. This time the Gators tied with the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks.
The Gators controlled the whole match as they outshot their opponents 28-12 including 5-4 on shots on goal. SF State (5-3-2, 1-2-2 CCAA) also had 14 corner kicks to the Lumberjacks' 8.
Kevin Esquivel recorded two saves en route to his second consecutive shutout while Christopher Cherms had 5 saves in goal for the Lumberjacks (1-8-1, 0-5-1 CCAA).
Braxton Griffin had two chances to give the guests an early lead in the third minute of the match, but his first shot hit the crossbar and the second sailed wide right. Then five minutes later,
Robert Kelly saw his shot sail wide right off a corner kick by
Ashley Watson. Griffin had two more chances but the Gators' defense stepped up to keep the match scoreless in the 10
th minute.
SF State had a couple of chances in the 20
th minute including
Jake Nokes' shot attempt but the Lumberjack defense either blocked the attempts or they sailed wide right. Then in the 24
th minute,
Max Talbert saw his shot on goal attempt be stopped by the Lumberjacks' Cherms.
Esquivel recorded one of his two saves on the day in the 27
th minute, when he stopped Alan Castillo's shot attempt.
Humboldt State had the last chance of the half to take the lead, but Sam Wahl's shot was blocked as the match went scoreless into the half.
SF State had several chances early in the second half to take the lead including
Jordan Wusstig's shot which was blocked in the 55
th minute.
Humboldt State's attempt to take the lead was stopped by Esquivel in the 76
th minute off the foot of Daniel Allred.
It looked like the Gators were going to take the lead in the 80
th minute, but
Emmanuel Serrano's attempt was stopped by Cherms and
Sam Merritt and Ayden Bowers each had their shot attempt blocked by the Lumberjack defense as the match went into the sudden death overtime periods.
Merritt had a chance for the golden goal be stopped by Cherms in the 92
nd minute. The Lumberjacks scored the golden goal in the 94
th minute, but it was called back because of an offsides' call.
It looked like the Gators' Nokes was going to be the hero, but Cherms recorded one of his five saves as the match went into the second overtime period.
Ilja Golubevs recorded one of the Gators' four shot attempts in the second overtime, but it sailed wide right in the 101
st minute. Then one minute later, Talbert's shot was blocked as was Bowers' shot in the 109
th minute as the match ended in a scoreless draw.
SF State will be on the road for its next two matches next weekend on October 9 and 11. The Gators will face Cal State San Marcos at 3pm on Oct. 9 in San Marcos. Then on Oct. 11, SF State will travel to La Jolla for a 2pm match with UC San Diego.
