SAN FRANCISCO– In their first dual action since November 21, the SF State Gators defeated the visiting Simpson Red Hawks 26-18 at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza. The Gators picked up wins from
Brandon Vu,
Jordan Gurrola,
Joshua Weinberg,
Dylan Furtado,
Tyson Kuahine and
Mike Marshall to pick up the victory over the Red Hawks (who are currently 11
th in the nation in NAIA).
SF State (1-2) went up 12-0 even before the dual started as the Gators recorded forfeit wins at 149 and 165.
Dylan Furtado improved to 3-6 while Kuahine is now 4-6.
The match started at 125 as
Brandon Vu won by a 12-4 major decision over Mason Sauseda to give the Gators a 16-0 lead. VU took an 8-1 lead after the first period and increased his lead to 11-3 after period number two. He recorded an escape in the last period to improve to 3-8 on the season.
In a battle of nationally ranked 133-pound wrestlers,
Jordan Gurrola, who is sixth in the nation, improved to 4-4 as he won by a 5-0 decision over Vicente Hernandez. The Red Hawks junior is currently tenth in the nation at NAIA. Gurrola recorded a take down in the first period and then had a reversal and added riding time for the 5-0 victory to increase the Gators' lead to 19-0.
Joshua Weinberg recorded another major decision win for the hosts as he defeated Simpson's Hayden Zimmerman by 16-6 at 141. Weinberg took a 6-2 lead after the first period with three two-point takedowns. Zimmerman recorded two escapes in the second, but Weinberg had a takedown to take an 8-4 lead into the last period. In the final period, Weinberg had three two-point takedowns and an escape along with riding time to improve to 4-5.
At 157, the Gators'
Tavis Ino (6-8) lost a narrow 3-1 decision in overtime as the Red Hawks' Richard Ortiz recorded a takedown in the first minute of overtime. Each wrestler recorded an escape to put the bout into the overtime period. Ortiz is currently fifth in the nation in NAIA.
Mike Marshall (5-8) increased the Gators' lead to 26-3 with a 4-0 decision over Simpson's Khalil Swinson. The Gator freshman recorded a two-point takedown in the first period and added an escape and had riding time in the third to take the 4-0 victory at 174.
Simpson (1-5) won the next three matches (two by fall and won by a decision), but the Gators took the dual 26-18. At 184,
Johnny Costa lost by fall at 5:39 to Brady Beaman. The Red Hawk senior is currently number one in the nation in NAIA. Costa (4-7) was down 4-1 after the first two periods and recorded an escape in the third before Beaman recorded the pin.
In the most exciting match of the afternoon, the Gators'
Calvin Nicholls lost by a 16-10 decision to Erik Medina. Nicholls (1-7) was down 8-1 after the first period to the 13
th ranked Medina at 197, but he cut the deficit to 9-5 heading in the final period with a takedown, reversal and a penalty point. In the third, Nicholls recorded two more takedowns and an escape, but Medina recorded six points to take the 16-10 decision.
In the final match of the afternoon in a another battle of nationally ranked wrestlers, Austin Lobsinger won by fall at 3:30 over the Gators'
Sam Alnassiri (7-5). The match was tied at 2-2 after one period, but Lobsinger took a 4-2 lead before the pin at 3:30. Alnassiri is currently fourth in the nation at 285 while Lobsinger is 11
th.
SF State will be off until the New Year, when the Gators travel down to Atherton, Calif., to participate in the Menlo College Open on January 2. The Gators will return to dual action on January 10 at 1pm when they host Cal State Bakersfield and No. 19 Stanford University in a pair of duals against NCAA Division I opponents at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza.
