LA JOLLA– The 15
th ranked UC San Diego Tritons swept this afternoon's conference doubleheader from the visiting SF State Gators 12-4 and 2-1 at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla, Calif. The two teams will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow at 11am for a single nine-inning game beginning at 11am in LaJolla.
Game one---
The 15
th ranked Tritons took a 1-0 lead in their frame of the first inning on a two-out run scoring single through the right side by Justin Flatt that scored Troy Cruz. They added two runs in the third on a two-out two-run double by Zach Freidman.
SF State tied the game with a three-run fourth inning.
Ryan Burke, who finished the game 2-for-4, had a lead-off double and scored on a one-out single by
Joseph Chedid. The Gator utility player scored on a triple by
Danny Souza.
Nick Jackson drove in Souza with the tying run on a ground out to second.
UC San Diego retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth scoring two runs, one on a one-out single by Flatt. The hosts added an insurance run in the sixth on a two-out double by Jack Larsen. The Tritons broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning to increase their lead to 11-3.
Mark Lindsay scored SF State's fourth run of the game in the eighth inning. The senior catcher led off the inning being hit by a pitch. He went to second on a passed ball and then went to third on a wild pitch. Lindsay scored on a wild pitch.
The Tritons added another run in the eighth on a double by Gradeigh Sanchez to give the hosts a 12-4 lead.
Dan Kolodin (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth as the Tritons took game one of this afternoon's doubleheader 12-4. Kolodin pitched 5 innings of relief, giving up one hit and one unearned run, striking out four and walking two. Alon Leichman started the game, pitching four innings, giving up 7 hits and three runs, striking out five.
Nolan Sheridan (0-2) recorded the loss in the start for SF State, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up 9 hits, six runs (four earned), striking out three and walking one.
SF State did have 8 hits with Burke, Lindsay and Souza each with two.
Lewis led the Tritons hitting attack going four-for-five scoring twice while Friedman drove in three of UC San Diego's 12 runs.
Game two:
Matt Vera drove in
Mark Lindsay with a two-out run scoring single in the top of the fourth to give SF State a 1-0 lead. The Tritons came back with two runs of their own in their frame of the fourth. Erik Lewis drove in the go-ahead run with a one-out single to right center.
SF State had a chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but closer Chad Reiser stranded the tying run and go ahead run on first and second with one out. Reiser induced to fly outs to preserve the 2-1 Bronco victory.
Vera finished the game with two hits for the Gators (1-5, 0-3 CCAA).
Bohnett (0-1) recorded the loss, pitching 5 innings of five-hit ball giving up two runs, striking out two and walking five.
Joseph Chedid pitched a scoreless sixth while striking out one.
Trevor Scott picked up the win, pitching 6 innings of five hit ball, giving up a run and striking out four. Reiser pitched a scoreless seventh for his first save.
After tomorrow's game in LaJolla, SF State will return home this Friday, February 20 at 2pm when the Gators begin a three-game series with No. 36 Fresno Pacific for a single nine-inning game at Maloney Field.
