@SFState_SOFT Drops Two To Visiting Vulcans

SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State softball team fell behind early in both halves of Wednesday's twin billing against visiting Hawaii-Hilo on Wednesday.  The Vulcans took game one 10-2 in six innings before taking the nightcap 7-0.

In the first game the Gators sent out sophomore Aryn Guzman (0-2) who was coming off her first career start in which she went six complete against UC San Diego.  In today's contest she ran into trouble in the first inning giving up three hits, including a two run-home run.  She managed to settle down going another 2.1 innings before her day ended.

Guzman managed to throw 3.1 innings, surrendering five hits, six earned runs, with six walks and two strike outs.

The Vulcans (8-6) started off the first inning with a leadoff base hit, a sacrifice fly, and a two-run home run off the bat of designated player Melanie Morelos.  To score three runs in the top of the first.

In the third inning the Gators cut that deficit to one run when Guzman helped her own cause.  With two outs, the Gators pitcher connected on a 2-2 offering and crushed the ball deep over the left field fence.

The two runs would be all the Gators would score on Vulcans' starter Vanessa Salinas (4-3).  Salinas did her part limiting the damage.  She threw five complete, allowing the two earned runs with a strike out.

To close out the game the Vulcans scored three in the fourth inning, a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth.  Jenny Obbema pitched 2.2 innings of relief, allowing four hits, three earned runs, with a walk.

In the nightcap the Gators received a fantastic pitching performance from starter Megan Clark (0-2) who threw six innings before being lifted in the seventh.  She dominated the game from the third through the sixth inning, not allowing a base runner to advance to second.

The Vulcans added two runs in the second when a single and an error allowed two runs to score.  The scoreboard would remain two-nothing until the seventh inning when the wheels came off for Clark and the Gators pitching staff.

In the top of the seventh, Clark surrendered three-straight hits to load the bases for Collen Aubrey, who drew a four pitch walk for the third run of the game.  That ended the day for Clark who threw 6.0 innings, surrendering six hits, six runs, four earned with three walks and three strike outs.

Courtney Dunkel entered the game for the Gators with no outs and the bases loaded.  The Vulcans scored four more runs to take the 7-0 lead.

Danielle Wilson (4-2) earned the win for the Vulcans.  She threw a complete game, scattering four hits, with a strike out.  Gators' freshman Sara Higa had a breakout performance.  Higa went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a single.

The Gators return to action on Friday when they host Humboldt State for a four-game CCAA series.  Game one of Friday's double header starters at 12:00 p.m. with the second game starting at 2:00 p.m.
