SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators took game one of this weekend's four-game series with Cal State L.A. 9-5 this afternoon at SF State's Maloney Field.
Nolan Sheridan picked up the win pitching 7 innings, giving up 7 hits, four runs (three earned), striking out one and walking three. Five different Gators had multiple-hits led by
Mark Lindsay's three-hit attack and
Bryce Cherry drove in three runs.
Sheridan improved to 1-3 on the season with the win while
Shane Martin pitched a scoreless eighth and
Cory Davis came in the ninth in relief for the Gators (3-8, 2-3 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the top second inning keyed by David Trejo's two-run single that drove in Nick Osuna and Jesus Cuevas.
SF State cut the Golden Eagle lead to 3-2 in its frame of the second.
Ryan Burke reached base on a one-out walk. He scored on a two-out double by
Matt Vera.
Andrew Breen walked to put runners on first and second. Then
Nick Jackson hit a single up the middle to drive in Vera with the Gators' second run.
The Gators took the lead for good with a two-run third inning.
Jacob Lopez had a lead-off single and scored on a double by Lindsay to tie the game at 3-3. Cherry gave the hosts the lead for good on a double to left center to drive in Lindsay with the go-ahead run.
SF State added two more runs in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead heading into the sixth. The Gators had a successful double steal attempt in the seventh as Lindsay and Lopez each stole a base and Lopez scored to give the hosts a 7-3 lead.
Cal State L.A. (9-3, 4-1 CCAA) added a run in the seventh inning on a one-out single by Dakota Hernandez.
The hosts came back with two insurance runs in the eighth. Jackson, 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, and
Fernando Escobar had back to back singles to lead off the eighth. Lopez drove in Jackson with a single to left field. Lindsay walked to load the bases for Cherry, who singled home Escobar to give the Gators a 9-4 lead.
Trent Zaks had a solo home run in the ninth for the Golden Eagles, who had their eight game winning streak snapped, to make the final 9-5.
Brandon Quintero (2-1) recorded the loss for Cal State L.A., while Trejo and Osuna each had two hits apiece to lead the Golden Eagle hitting attack.
Besides Lindsay, Cherry and Jackson each with multiple-hits, Vera and Lopez each had two hits also for SF State which had 13 hits on the day.
The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow morning with a doubleheader at SF State's Maloney Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11am. The series will conclude on Sunday morning with a single nine-inning game at 11am.
