@SFState_SOFT Falls To Wildcats To Begin Series

CHICO – The SF State women's softball team is still looking to break into the win column in conference play.  The Gators fell to host Chico State 4-1 in the opener before losing to the Wildcats 10-4 in the nightcap in Friday's double header at Wildcat Softball Field.

The Gators (1-13/0-10 CCAA) saw the bats wake up, as SF State pounded out 15 hits on the day, unfortunately, the Wildcats tallied 14 runs on the afternoon.  Eight coming in the bottom of the second in the second game giving the Wildcats a commanding lead.

Leading the Gators at the plate and swinging a hot bat is sophomore second baseman Marisa Andrade.  Andrade started the day going a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles and a run scored in the first game  She wrapped up the day going 1-for-3 with yet another double, her fourth of the day, in the nightcap.

In the series opener Gators starter Megan Clark (0-6) took the ball.  She threw a perfect first inning and a clean second before finally running into trouble in the bottom of the third.  A leadoff walk, a stolen base and an infield single got the Wildcats on the board.  Back-to-back two-out doubles by Chico State put them out front 3-1.

SF State struck first when Andrade led off the inning with the first of her three doubles to left center.  She moved to third on the sacrifice bunt by Aryn Guzman and scored on the RBI single up the middle by Selina Rodriguez

Chico State (8-2/5-1 CCAA) added a run in the bottom of the fourth with a leadoff double came around to score on a sac fly.  The inning could have been much worse for the Gators, as the Wildcats loaded the bases with no outs, but Clark battled and limited the damage to one run.

Earning the win for the Wildcats in the first game was starter Brooke Langeloh (6-0).  Langeloh went the distance, going seven complete, scattering six hits, one earned run with a walk and four strike outs.  Clark countered going six complete, surrendering nine hits, four earned runs with two walks and three strike outs.

In the nightcap the Gators sent out starter Courtney Dunkel (1-2).  Dunkel made quick work of the Wildcats in the first inning but could not get out of the second.  She lasted just 1.2 innings, surrendering eight hits, six runs, four earned with a walk and a strike out before being lifted for relief pitcher Jenny Obbema.  The Wildcats wrapped up the inning scoring eight runs to take a commanding 8-0 lead after the second.

The Gators countered scoring three in the third.  Chelsea Brent led off the inning with a single deep in the hole at second. She moved to second on the ground ball to first by Guzman.  Lyndsi Garcia singled to short with two outs that put runners at the corners for SF State.  The big hit was delivered by Rodriguez who tripled to right field and came around to score on the throwing error.

The Wildcats added two more runs to go up 10-3.  SF State added another run in the sixth when Courtney Gravel doubled to left center and scored on the ground out to short by Lucy Fernandez.

Haley Gilham earned the win for the Wildcats, she went seven complete, scattering nine hits, allowing three earned runs, with three strike outs.

The Gators and Wildcats will resume the series tomorrow morning starting at 11:00 a.m., with the second half of the double header slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
