@SFState_WBB Cannot Overcome Late Surge By Toros

CARSON – The SF State women's basketball team had the game tied midway in the second half against the top team in the conference.  However, a late push by Cal State Dominguez Hills put the Toros out front for good where they won the game 51-37 at the Torodome.

SF State (1-25/1-21 CCAA) did not have a player in double figures on the evening, but eight of the nine players did score for the Gators.  Seniors Leticia Galarza and Liz Wyrsch joined Jayzyl Tauala with a team-high seven points.

On the evening, the Gators shot just 27.5 percent, going 14-for-51 from the floor.  From 3-point range SF State shot just 4-for-21.  The Toros (24-6/19-3) outrebounded the Gators 50-28 on the evening, and was led by junior guard Breanna Garcia who scored a game-high 21 points.

The Gators jumped out to an early 6-0 lead when Galarza and Michelle Sutton hit a pair of 3-point baskets.  The Gators held onto that lead until the 16:16 mark when the Toros took their first lead on a three point bucket from Taylor Champion.

With 9:10 in the half SF State tied the game on a layup by Tauala, the Gators retook the lead with 8:28 left in the half, 23-19, on a three point bucket by Brittaney Allison

The Toros closed out the half on a 10-0 to go into the intermission with a 29-23 lead.  The Gators shot just 9-for-28 in the half but limited the Torors to just eight buckets on 29 attempts.

Out of the intermission the Gators went on a 6-0 run to tie the game up at 29-29.  CSUDH retook the lead and pushed it to six, 35-29 with 12:56 left in the game following a layup by Talia Rayford.

The Gators cut that lead to four, 35-31 following a layup by Tauala.  That was the closest the Gators could get.  The Toros put the game away going on a 12-0 run to go up 47-31 with 7:35 left.

A free throw by Wyrsch with 24 seconds remaining was the final bucket of the season for the Gators.

Sutton finished the night with four points, giving her 274 for the season.  She wraps up her career with 418 career points.  Galarza finishes the season with 188 points and 335 for her career. Wyrsch scored 65 in her lone season with the Gators.

With the win, the Toros clinch the top-spot in the CCAA tournament.
