@SFState_SOFT Overpowers Hawks In Doubleheader Sweep

SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State softball team simply dominated Friday's non-conference doubleheader against Bay Area foe Holy Names at the SF State Softball Field.  The Gators pounded out 13 runs on 17 hits on the day, meanwhile the pitching staff completely stymied the Hawks as SF State took game one 4-0 and the nightcap 9-1 after five innings.

In the first game of the afternoon, the day belonged to starter Megan Clark (1-7). Clark was near unhittable, pitching a two-hit complete game shutout.  She lost her no-hit bid with two outs in the top of the sixth inning when softly hit ground ball made its way through the left side of the infield.

Holy Names only got a runner to third base once in the opener, as Clark faced just three batters over the minimum.  For the day, she tossed seven complete innings, with two hits, no runs, a pair of walks and a strike out.  She needed just 87 pitches to go the distance.

SF State (5-17) gave Clark all the run support she needed in the bottom of the third inning when the Gators broke through for three runs on three hits, the big one coming off the bat of center fielder Chelsea Brent who clubbed a two-run double over the left fielders head with the bases loaded to plate a pair.  A sacrifice bunt by Jennifer Lewis gave the Gators their other run.

SF State added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth when Sara Higa scored from second base on the single by Aryn Guzman

Guzman had a big day at the plate, she went 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, two runs scored and three driven on.

Taking the loss for the Hawks (2-20) in game one was starter Vanessa Pulido (1-9).  Pulido was roughed up for six hits, four runs, all earned with a strike out in four innings of work.  Kayla Simonson went the final two innings for Holy Names in relief.

In the nightcap the Gators offense exploded for a season-high nine runs as the Gators run-ruled the Hawks in five innings.  Six gators recorded a hit in the second game, with four players recording multiple hits.  Freshman Delanie Chrisman wrapped up a strong day, going 1-for-2 with a run scored, she went 2-for-4 on the afternoon collecting her first two collegiate hits.

The Gators scored three runs in the first, and six in the second, putting the game away early.  In the bottom of the first inning.  A two-out, two-run double by Higa was the clutch at bat of the frame as it plated Lucy Fernandez and Lewis.

In the bottom of the second inning the Gators batted through the lineup, the big hit coming off the bat of Guzman who clubbed her second home run of the year, a shot over the left-centerfield fence off of starter Karolanne Tipton (1-9).

Tipton lasted just two innings and pitched another in relief, going 3.0 complete, she surrendered six hits, five runs, three earned with a walk and a strike out.  Simsonson pitched an inning of relief and was roughed up for four runs on four hits with a walk and a strike out.

Courtney Dunkel (3-4) earned her team leading third win of the season pitching three effective innings, she scattered four hits and recorded a strike out.  Jenny Obbema pitched two innings in relief, she scattered four hits, a run with a walk.

The middle of the order came to life today, the Gators 3-4-5 hitters combined to go 3-for-8 with four runs scored and three runs driven in.  Fernandez went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Lewis joined her going 1-for-2 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, and freshman Angelica Terrel recorded her first career RBI.

The Gators return to action next Friday, March 20 when the Gators begin a four-game CCAA series against Cal State San Bernardino.  Game one of Friday's double header will start at 1:00 p.m.
