CARSON – The SF State Gators rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros 7-5 in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader in Carson, Calif.
Cory Davis pitched a scoreless ninth as he broke the school career record with his 17
th save in his one-plus year career at SF State. The Toros (14-13, 9-10 CCAA) won the night cap 15-3 to salvage the split of the doubleheader.
Game OneMark Lindsay's run scoring double in top of the first inning brought in
Jacob Lopez with the game's first run. Lopez had a lead-off single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Fernando Escobar.
The Toros took a 2-1 lead in their half of the second inning keyed by a Joshua Flores RBI double down the left field line which brought in Fernando Gallegos. Cal State Dominguez Hills doubled their lead on a two-run single by Gallegos in the Toro third inning.
The score remained 4-1 Toros until the Gator fifth inning.
Garrett Heisinger had a lead-off single and went to second, when
Andrew Breen reached on a Toro error. Jackson also reached base on an error to load the bases with no outs. Heisinger scored on a sacrifice fly by Lopez. Escobar was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Lindsay, who delivered with a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4. Escobar scored when
Bryce Cherry reached on a fielder's choice to give the guests a 5-4 lead.
SF State (10-11, 9-6 CCAA) added another run in the sixth on a Lopez run scoring single with two outs that brought in
Nick Jackson. Jackson reached base on a two-out triple to right center. The Gators added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by
Chad Thurston, which brought in Cherry after he reached base on a one-out triple.
CSUDH cut the Gator lead to 7-5 on a RBI double by Brandon Polizzi in the Toro eighth inning.
Cory Davis came on relief in the Toro ninth and shut down the hosts 1, 2, and 3 to record his fourth save of the season and 17
th of his career. Davis broke Joey Diaz's record of 16 saves set in during the 1994-97 seasons.
Ryan Bohnet (2-3) picked up the win in the start, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and four runs, striking out five and walking three.
Shane Martin came on relief for Bohnet, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up two hits and one run, striking out four and walking one. Davis pitched a scoreless ninth striking out one batter.
Lopez and Lindsay each had two hits to lead the Gator hitting attack. Lindsay drove in three runs while Lopez drove in two and Jackson scored two of the Gators' 7 runs.
Jeffrey Gogue (1-2) recorded the loss for the hosts and Polizzi had three of the Toros' 10 hits.
Game TwoLopez gave the Gators a 1-0 lead in their half of the first inning. He had a lead-off double and scored when Lindsay grounded into a double play after Escobar reached on a single. SF State added another run in the second on a two-out single by Lopez which brought in Heisinger, who led off the inning with a walk.
The Toros cut into the Gator lead on Daniel Matienzo's run scoring single which brought in Johnny Palmer in the Toro third.
SF State took a 3-1 lead on a Heisinger single to left field to bring in Thurston with the Gators' third run. Thurston reached base on a two-out single and advanced to third when
Matt Vera was hit by a pitch. He scored on Heisinger's single to left.
Cal State Dominguez Hills took the lead for the first time with a six-run fourth inning capped by Kamran Young's two-run single and Brady Conlan's two-run double to give the Toros a 6-3 lead. The Toros added two more runs in the fifth on Polizzi's two-out double. They broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning to give them a 15-3 lead.
Kevin Brown (4-0) picked up the win in the start, pitching five innings, giving up 9 hits and three runs while walking two. TyRay Gatewood pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the Toros. Young and Matienzo each had three hits apiece to lead the Toros' hitting attack.
Peter Reyes (2-3) recorded the loss for SF State, who going into tonight's conference games remain in fourth place in the CCAA. Lopez, Cherry and Thurston had two hits apiece for the Gators.
SF State will look for the series win tomorrow as the two teams finish out the four-game weekend series with a single nine-inning game beginning at 11am at Toro Field in Carson. The Gators will return home on Friday, March 27 at 3pm, when they begin a four-game home and away series with Cal State Stanislaus at Maloney Field.
