SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators ended the weekend on a high note scoring a season high 12 runs on 14 hits to defeat the visiting Cal State Stanislaus Warriors 12-4 this afternoon in the series finale at Maloney Field. The top of the order for the Gators (
Nick Jackson,
Fernando Escobar and
Mark Lindsay) were a combined 8-for-12, scoring four times and driving in five runs to lead the way for the hosts.
Preston Tarter (1-3) recorded his first win of the season, pitching 5 innings of four-hit ball, giving up three runs, walking six and striking out three. Tarter gave up all three runs in the top of the second inning, but rebounded and pitched a scoreless third, fourth and fifth before giving the ball to
Shane Martin. The junior left-handed reliever came on in the sixth and pitched four innings of relief, giving up three hits and one run, walking three and striking out one en route to his first save as a Gator.
Jackson led off the Gator first with an infield single and went to second on an errant throw. He advanced to second on an Escobar single.
Mark Lindsay drove Jackson in with the game's first run with a single up the middle to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. With his two hits on the day, Lindsay now has 190 for his two-year career at SF State which places him second on the Gators' all-time hits list. Phil Kernan (1992-95) holds the career record in Gatorville with 211.
The Warriors (10-19, 5-14 CCAA) scored three runs in the next half inning capped by a Stevie Robinson two-out double down the left field line.
The score remained 3-1 Cal State Stanislaus until the Gator half of the third inning. With two outs, Lindsay walked and went to second on a single by
Chad Thurston.
Garrett Heisinger loaded the bases as he was hit by a pitch.
Jacob Lopez then hit an infield single to drive in Lindsay to cut the Gator deficit to 3-2. Then with the count 2-0,
Bryce Cherry hit a bases-clearing triple to center field to give SF State back the lead, 5-3. That was Cherry's team leading third triple of the season.
SF State (11-15, 10-10 CCAA) added two more insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-3 lead heading into the sixth inning. In the sixth, the Gators scored three more runs capped by a two-out two-run single by Escobar to increase their lead to 12-3.
Michael Chavarria's two-out single in the ninth scored Erik Colombini in the ninth to give the Warriors their fourth run of the game. Martin induced the final out of the game on a fly out to Lopez in right as the Gators took the series finale 12-4. Blake Wilson (0-1) took the loss for the Warriors while Chavarria had three of their 7 hits.
Jackson, who now has reached safely in 10 straight games, was 3-for-5 scoring three times and driving in a run. Escobar, who has reached safely in 13 straight games, finished the day 3-for-4 driving in two runs and scoring a run for the Gators. Lindsay had his 12
th multiple-hit game going 2-for-3.
SF State moves into fifth place in the conference with the win as UC San Diego, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State L.A. and Cal State Monterey Bay hold the top four spot in the CCAA. The top four teams at the end of the regular season on May 3 will advance to the CCAA Baseball Championships in Stockton, Calif., May 7-10.
The Gators will return to the diamond this Thursday, April 2 as they will begin a four-game home and away series with Cal State Monterey Bay. The series will begin with a single nine-inning game in Seaside on Thursday at 3pm. The two teams will then play a doubleheader this Friday, April 3 at SF State's Maloney Field with first pitch of game one of the doubleheader scheduled for noon. The series will conclude the next day also at noon in Seaside for a single nine-inning game.
