@SFState_BASE Pitches Way To Series Victory Over Pioneers

SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State baseball team earned a series victory over Bay Area rivals Cal State East Bay taking both halves of Saturday's double header at Maloney Field.  The Gators took the opener 3-1 and ran away with the night cap 8-1.

SF State (6-10/5-5 CCAA) had two tremendous pitching performances from its starting pitchers.  In game one Ryan Bohnet twirled a four-hit gem over eight innings to earn his first win of the season.  He needed just 90 pitches to get the job done, and shut the Pioneers down over his final seven innings of work.

In the night cap, Peter Reyes proved he was equal to the task.  He threw six complete, scattering five hits, giving up just one run to earn his second win of the season.

Cory Davis tied the school record with his 16th career save in game one, he threw a perfect ninth with a strike out to end the game.

In the series opener the Pioneers (4-11/1-10 CCAA) got on the board first when Myles Babitt started the rally with a one out double down the right field line.  Babitt scored on the two-out base hit to right field off the bat of Daniel Carney.

That would be it for the Pioneers who could not get a base runner to second the rest of the game.  Bohnet retired the last 12 batters he faced before turning the ball over to Davis in the ninth.

The Gators got Bohnet his run support finally breaking through with three runs in the sixth inning after threatening all game. Bryce Cherry led off the inning with a double to right field, he moved to third on the single through the left side by Ryan BurkeGarrett Heisinger tied the game up with a base hit to left field that scored Cherry from third.  A bung single by Matt Vera loaded the bases for the Gators who scored two more runs on a fielder's choice off the bat of Nate Jackson and a single to left field by Jacob Lopez.

Taking the loss for the Pioneers in game one was Jacob Call (0-1).  Call went 5.1 innings surrendering six hits, three runs, all earned with a pair of walks and no strike outs.

In the second half of the twin billing the Pioneers once again struck first.  Scoring a run in the top of the third inning.  Two straight hits and a sacrifice fly plated the Pioneers only run of the game.

SF State countered scoring four in the fourth, and blew the game wide open plating four more in the fifth inning.  Mark Lindsay and Fernando Escobar both went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs driven in.  Lopez, Cherry, Burke, Heisinger, and Jackson all collected hits.

Taking the loss for the Pioneers in game two was Justin Harr (1-3).  Harr lasted just 2.2 innings, he served up five hits, four runs, all earned, with three walks.

Grant Vogenthaler pitched the seventh, throwing up a zero on the board, pitching around a walk and a base hit.

The Gators look to go for the series sweep tomorrow in Hayward when the series returns to Pioneer Field.  First pitch is scheduled for noon in Hayward..
