Jacob Lopez's one-out walk-off single scored
Danny Souza with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give the SF State Gators the sweep of this afternoon's doubleheader. The Gators won the night cap 4-3.
Connor Fraser's one-out run scoring single in the eighth inning proved to be the game-winning hit in the opener as SF State took game one 5-3.
Game OneSF State (13-16, 12-11 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead on a two-out run scoring single by Fraser in the bottom of the second inning bringing in
Bryce Cherry who had double on the previous at bat.
Andrew Breen's two-out single in the fourth scored Lopez to double the Gators' lead to 2-0.
Cal State Monterey Bay tied the game at 2-2 in its half of the fifth inning. Brian Hamm had a lead-off single and went to second when Myles Hager walked. They each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Matt Urakami then singled home both Hamm and Hager to tie the game at two.
The game remained tied until the Otter seventh inning. Urakami and Devin Finn each walked with one out. Then with one out, Urakami and Finn moved up a base on a double steal. Ty Morris walked to load the bases with one out. Urakami scored when Curtis Gomez walked to give the Otters a 3-2 lead.
SF State retook the lead with a three-run eighth inning.
Garrett Heisinger led off the inning being hit by a pitch. He went to second when Lopez walked. They each advanced a base on a sacrifice by Cherry. Heisinger crossed home with the tying run on a wild pitch. Then with the count 1-2 and one out, Fraser hit a single to left field which brought in Lopez with the go-ahead run. Breen walked to put runners on first and second with one out.
Nick Jackson singled to load the bases. Fraser scored on a ground out by
Fernando Escobar to give the Gators an insurance run.
Cory Davis recorded his fifth save of the season as he retired the Otters in order in the ninth including striking out the last two batters.
Joseph Chedid (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the hosts as he pitched a scoreless eighth inning striking out two Otter batters.
Ryan Bohnet recorded the no-decision in the start for SF State, pitching 6.2 innings, giving up four this and three runs, walking six and striking out five.
Brett Hammond (0-1) picked up the loss in relief for Cal State Monterey Bay, giving up two runs and walking one. Jeff Owen had the no-decision the start, pitching 7 innings of 7-hit ball, giving up two runs (one earned), striking out three and walking two.
Jackson, Cherry, Fraser and Breen each had two hits apiece for the Gators with Lopez scoring twice and Fraser with two RBIs.
Game TwoThe Otters (21-14, 17-10 CCAA) took a 1-0 lead in the night cap on a two-out double by Kevin Davidson, who finished the game 3-for-4, which scored Gomez.
SF State came back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning. Jackson had a lead-off walk and went to second on a wild pitch. He advanced to third on a ground out by Lindsay. Jackson scored on a two-out single to right center by
Chad Thurston. Thurston then stole second and scored on a single by Heisinger to give the Gators a 2-1 lead.
Peter Reyes shut down the Otters until their half of the fifth inning when Shawn Wheeler scored on wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2. Wheeler reached on a lead-off single and went to second when Morris walked. He advanced to third on a fly out to left center by Gomez and scored on a wild pitch.
SF State retook the lead in its half of the fifth. Escobar walked to lead off the inning and went to third on a single by Lindsay. He scored when Thurston grounded into a double play to give the hosts a brief 3-2 lead.
Cal State Monterey Bay tied the game again in its half of the sixth inning. Hamm reached on an error, advanced to second when Hager walked. With one out, each runner advanced a base on a ground out by Wheeler. With two outs, pinch-hitter Chris Blanton singled home Hamm with the tying run on the first pitch he saw from reliever Davis.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Lindsay had a lead-off single.
Danny Souza came in to pinch run for Lindsay. Souza stole second and went to third on a one-out single by Heisinger who then stole second to put runners on second and third. Lopez then hit the fifth pitch he saw for a single to bring in Souza with the game-winning run.
Davis (2-2) picked up the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings, giving up two hits, striking out one and walking one. Reyes had the no-decision, going 4.2 innings, giving up three hits, two runs, striking out two and walking five. Chedid pitched one inning of relief, giving up one unearned run and walking one.
Kory Groves (1-1) recorded the loss for Cal State Monterey Bay, pitching 0.1 innings, giving up th4ree hits and one run, striking out one. Ryan Boydstun had the start for the Otters, pitching five innings, giving up five hits, three runs, walking six and striking out four.
Lindsay and Heisinger each had two hits apiece to lead the Gators' hitting attack. With the sweep, the Gators are now in fifth place in the CCAA standings while the Otters are now in fourth place. The two teams will conclude their four-game series tomorrow afternoon at noon for a single nine-inning game at the Otter Sports Complex in Seaside, Calif.
