SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State Gators sent their nine seniors out in style with a 7-2 win over the No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos in both team's regulars season finale at The Swamp at Maloney Field. Senior catcher
Mark Lindsay became SF State's all-time career leader with 213 hits as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Senior pitcher
Preston Tarter picked up his team leading fourth win as he pitched 7.1 innings of 7 hit ball, striking out a season high 6 batters while walking two and giving up two runs.
The game was scoreless until the Gator half of the fourth inning. Lindsay became the Gators' all-time leader in hits with a lead-off single to right field. He advanced to second on a single by
Garrett Heisinger. With no outs, Lindsay advanced to third on a fielder's choice to second by
Bryce Cherry. Then with the count 1-1,
Matt Vera singled home Lindsay with the game's first run.
Will Hein walked to load the bases and then Cherry scored on a ground out by
Danny Souza to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
SF State added an insurance run in the fifth inning when
Nick Jackson had a lead-off single. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Fernando Escobar. Jackson scored on Lindsay's second hit of the day, a single to left center, to increase the Gator lead to 3-0.
The Gators broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning. Vera had a lead-off walk. The senior infielder went to third on a double to left field by
Will Hein. Vera and Hein scored on a double by Souza to give the visitors a 5-0 lead. With one out, Souza advanced to third on a wild pitch. Jackson and Escobar walked to load the bases for Lindsay. The four-year letter-winner walked to bring in Souza. With two outs, Jackson scored on a wild pitch to increase the Gators' lead to 7-0 heading into the final three innings of the game.
Tarter held the Broncos (37-13, 28-12 CCAA) scoreless until the top of the eighth inning. Matt Munoz walked to lead off the inning. He went to second when Antonio Lopez was hit by a pitch. Michael Zidek's single loaded the bases with no outs. Munoz scored on a fielder's choice by Caleb Romo.
Cory Davis came into pitch for Tarter with runners on the corners and one out. Brennen Salgado singled home Lopez to cut the Gator lead to 7-2, but Davis struck out the next Bronco batter and induced the final out on a pop out to
Andrew Breen at shortstop.
SF State (19-29, 17-23 CCAA) looked like it was going to score more runs in the Gator half of the eighth.
Ryan Romero led off the inning with a pinch-hit single to right field, his first hit in a Gator uniform. He went to second when Escobar walked. Bronco reliever, Auston Boyle, retired the final three Gator batters on a line-out, fly out and a ground out.
In the Bronco ninth, Davis struck out the first two batters. Munoz walked and went to second on an infield hit by Lopez to put runners on first and second with two outs. Davis then recorded his fourth strikeout of the game and his 42
nd of the season to end the game with a Gator 7-2 win. The senior reliever pitched 1.2 innings, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out four. He finishes his career as the Gators' all-time leader in saves with 21 and 7
th with 47 appearances.
Ryan Alsworth (3-2) recorded the loss in the start for the Broncos, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up 5 hits and two runs, striking out 5 and walking one. Four other Broncos pitched today with Wyatt Shackleford and Boyle pitching the final 2.2 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, walking four and striking out four. Garlick and Lopez each had two hits for Cal Poly Pomona, who finished with 9 on the day.
The Gators had 10 hits with two Gators with multiple hit days in Jackson and Lindsay. The sophomore outfielder finished the day 3-for-3 scoring two of SF State's 7 runs while Lindsay was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Souza drove in three of the hosts' 7 runs two on his first double of the season.
Besides finishing his career as the Gators' all-time career leader in hits, Lindsay also is the all-time leader in at bats (688) and games played (192). He also finished 6
th in walks (70) and 10
th with his 86 runs batted in his career at SF State.
