TURLOCK – In both team's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener, it was the Stanislaus State Warriors (6-0-0, 1-0-0 CCAA) defeating the visiting SF State Gators 2-0 at Warrior Stadium in Turlock. The Warriors scored both of their goals in the first 22 minutes of the match.
SF State did win the battle in corner kicks with 7 to the Warriors' 5. Stanislaus State outshot the Gators 24-12 including 11-5 in shots on goal.
The Warriors recorded the first two shot on goal attempts in the first seven minutes, but the Gators'
Emmanuel Jimenez recorded two of his 9 saves on the afternoon.
Daniel Kuczynski scored his eighth goal of the season to give the hosts the 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute. Kuczynski scored off a ball from Gerardio Cazares right in front of the net.
It looked like the Gators (4-2-0, 0-1-0 CCAA) were going to tie the match, but
Robert Kelly's two shot on goal attempts were stopped by the Warrior defense to keep the score 1-0 Stanislaus State. The Warriors doubled their lead in the 22
nd minute as Jose Ramirez connected on a pass from Luis Hernandez and Rafael Chavez to give the hosts a 2-0 lead.
SF State had a chance to cut into the deficit, but
Max Talbert's header sailed high over the goal in the 30
th minute. Stanislaus State had three chances to increase its lead in 36
th minute, but Jimenez stopped all three of them to keep the score at 2-0 Warriors heading into halftime.
In the second half,
James Aguirre had a chance to cut the Warrior lead in half but Russ Klabough made one of his four saves on the afternoon in the 68
th minute. The Gators had another chance to cut the Warrior lead in half, but Klabough stopped
Sam Merritt's penalty kick attempt in the 81
st minute. SF State had two more chances to score, but Talbert's two shot attempts were either sopped by Klabough and blocked by the Warrior defense as the hosts took the 2-0 victory.
SF State will return to the pitch this Sunday morning at 11:30am as the Gators travel to Hayward, Calif., for a CCAA match-up with the Cal State East Bay Pioneers. Cal State East Bay lost 2-1 to Cal State Monterey Bay this afternoon in Hayward.
