SAN FRANCISCO-- The SF State Gators wrestled two Division I opponents this afternoon in the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners and the No. 18 Stanford Cardinal. The Gators lost 32-12 to the Roadrunners and 30-11 to the Cardinal this afternoon at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza.
The Roadrunners (6-2) took a 6-0 lead in their match with the Gators as Rueben Franklin (22-5) won by fall at 1:54 over
Calvin Nicholls at 197. Franklin is ranked fifth in the nation. SF State cut the deficit in half as
Sam Alnassiri won by a 5-4 decision over Matt Williams (15-13) at 285.
Cal State Bakersfield took a 16-3 lead after matches at 125 and 133. At 125, Sergio Mendoza won by fall (1:20) over
Christian Ramos and then at 133 Carlos Herrera (13-13) won by a 10-1 major decision over the Gators'
Fern Giron. SF State cut into the Roadrunner lead with an 11-7 decision at 141 by
Joshua Weinberg over Tyler Lawrence (6-4). Cal State Bakersfield increased its lead to 20-6 with a 10-1 major decision by Coleman Hammond (15-8) over the Gators'
Dylan Furtado. Then at 157, AJ Fierro (16-1) won by a 6-2 decision over SF State's
Tavis Ino.
Tyson Kuahine put the Gators back on the board with a win by fall (4:10) over the Roadrunners' Bryan Battisto (8-9). This was Kuahine's second win by fall this season. Cal State Bakersfield took the final two matches at 174 and 184 to make the final 32-12. At 174, Bryce Hammond (13-3) won by fall (0:44) over the Gators'
Mike Marshall. The in the final match of the dual, Jesus Ambriz (5-8) won by a 14-8 decision over
Gabe Fuentes.
In their match against Stanford, the Gators fell behind 8-0 after the first two matches. Michael Sojka (9-5) won by a 14-0 major decision over Nicholls (3-11) at 197 and Nathan Butler (16-4) won by a 9-0 major decision over Alnassiri (11-6) at 285.
The Gators (1-4) took an 11-8 lead after the next two bouts. At 125,
Christian Ramos (1-1) won by forfeit and then at 133 Giron (7-4) won by a 17-0 technical fall (6:32) over the Cardinal's Eric Cramer (0-2).
At 141, the Cardinal tied the match at 11-1 with a 3-2 decision by Peter Russo (8-3) over the Gators' Weinberg (8-5). They retook the lead (14-11) as Tommy Pawelski (4-6) recorded a takedown in the overtime period to defeat the Gators' Furtado (5-10).
Stanford (4-2) won the last four matches to take the dual 30-11. At 157, Walker Dempsey (2-6) won by a 2-1 decision over the Gators'
Tavis Ino (8-12). Jim Wilson, who is currently 13
th in the nation, won by an 18-2 technical fall (5:29) over Kuahine (8-8) to improve to 14-4. Dylan Morris (11-7) won by a 6-0 decision over SF State's
Mike Marshall (11-11). Then in the final match of the day, Zach Nevills (9-7) won by a 17-0 technical fall at 5:29) over
Gabe Fuentes (4-8).
SF State will return to the mat this Saturday, January 16 in Kearney, Neb., as Gators will participate in the UNK Midwest Duals at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. The Gators will face Adams State at 9am CST, Central Oklahoma at 10:30am CST, Fort Hays State at 1:30pm PST and Colorado State Pueblo at 3pm PST.
