Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | SF State Sports Information

@SFState_WBB Cannot Overcome Big Second Quarter By Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. – The SF State women's basketball team went into the second quarter with a 15-10 advantage in the game, unfortunately, things quickly spiraled out of control from there as the Warriors rode an 18-4 second period en-route to a 60-47 win Saturday night at the Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

SF State shot 29.6 percent from the field, going 16-for-54 on the evening.  From 3-point range, the Gators were 5-for-15, but was just 3-for-8 from deep after the intermission.  Leading the team in scoring was senior guard Tatsiana Dashkevich who scored a team-high 16 points on 4-for-11 shooting from the field.  At the charity stripe, Dashkevich was particularly effective, going 5-for-7.

Overall, the Gators (4-11/2-7 CCAA) got offensive contributions from the entire lineup, every Gator who saw the floor scored at least two points on the evening.  Kiara Ginwright had an all-around solid evening, she finished the game with seven points, nine rebounds and five blocks.  Naila Washington battled for a game-high 13 rebounds, while scoring six points.

The game got off to a great start for the Gators, SF State ended the opening period with a 15-10 lead.  Washington got the game started with a layup on the Gators first possession.  With 1:22 left in the quarter Ginwright took the feed from Dashkevich for a bucket giving the Gators a five point advantage, their largest lead of the evening.  The assist for Dashkevich was her fifth of the quarter, she finished the night with six total assists.

In the second quarter things turned quickly in favor of the Warriors.  Stanislaus State (12-4/8-2 CCAA) went on a 15-0 run to start the second quarter to take a commanding lead.  During that stretch the Gators went 0-for-7 from the field and committed four turnovers.  The Warriors responded by going 6-for-9 from the floor during that stretch, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range.

Heading into half, the Gators found themselves trailing 28-19.  SF State shot 32 percent from the field in the opening half.  However, the Warriors responded by shooting 33 percent from the floor, going 10-for-30.  A big reason for the Warriors big push in the second period was the points off turnovers.  The Gators tallied 10 turnovers in the second quarter, 28 overall.  Those 28 turnovers led 23 points for the Warriors.

In the third quarter the Gators made a run to cut the halftime deficit to eight points.  However that was as close as SF State would get.  The Warriors extended their lead to a game-high 19 points with 6:31 to play in the fourth quarter.

SF State returns to action on Friday, January 22 when they host Cal State East Bay at 5:30 p.m. at The Swamp.
