Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | SF State Sports Information

@SFState_WBB Falls To No. 25 UC San Diego At Home

SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State women's basketball struggled through a cold shooting performance on Thursday night, falling to visiting No. 25 UC San Diego 93-34 at the Swamp.  The Gators fall to 4-8/2-4 CCAA while UCSD improves to 11-2/6-1 CCAA.

SF State connected on just 11 field goals on the evening, shooting a season-low 18 percent from the floor.  A big contribution to the Gators poor shooting performance was SF State's struggles from beyond the arc.  The Gators connected on just 1-of-19 attempts from distance, none coming after the intermission, where they were 0-for-10.

Freshman guard Lauryn Catching led the Gators with eight points on the evening.  Tatsiana Dashkevich and Laura Lawson added six points each.  Freshman center Kiara Ginwright continued to add to her impressive blocked shots total, she finished the night with six, giving her 48 on the year.

The first play of the game began with a steal by Dashkevich who was fouled on the fast break layup, she hit the first free throw but missed the second attempt.  The 1-0 Gator advantage would be their only lead of the night.  From there things quickly spiraled out of control for the Gators.

SF State shot just 12.5 percent from the floor in the opening period, going 2-for-16 from the field, and 1-for-9 from 3-point range.  The lone bright spot in that period was the play of Ginwright who tallied four blocks early.  Dashkevich hit an open three point bucket to make the deficit five, at 11-6.

The Tritons pushed their lead to 18 with the help of strong free throw shooting, UCSD made 20-of-22 attempts from the charity stripe in the opening period.

In the third quarter the Gators had their biggest period, scoring 13 points, most of that damage coming from Lawson who scored all six of her points after the intermission.  The Tritons still responded by scoring 18 points in the period to extend their lead.

In the fourth and final quarter UCSD outscored the Gators 26-9.  A big advantage on the night for the Tritons was their play in the paint, where they outscored the Gators 35-14.  UCSD had four players in double figures and was led by Jamie Katuna's game-high 16 points.

SF State returns to action on Saturday when they host Cal State San Bernardino at 5:30 p.m. at The Swamp.
