SANTA ROSA –The San Francisco State played a hard fought match at the No. 19 Sonoma State Seawolves, but came up on the wrong side of the scoreboard this afternoon at Cook Sypher Field in Santa Rosa. The Seawolves' Sam Lyman connected on a loose ball 10 yards out in front of the goal for the golden goal in the 91
st of the match this afternoon.
The loss snapped the Gators two-match winning streak and was the first goal they gave up since a 2-0 loss to then No 8 UC San Diego on October 7. San Francisco State (7-5-3, 4-4-2 CCAA) had a chance to take a 1-0 lead in the 63
rd minute when
Chelsea Frostick's shot sailed wide left. Then one minute later,
Brittany Oldham had a chance for the goal, but her attempt was blocked by the Sonoma State defense. The Seawolves, who improve to 9-2-1 overall and 7-1 in the CCAA, had a chance for the game-winner late in the match but Miriam Bloom's attempt was stopped by the Gators'
Christina Holguin.
The Gators are off until Monday, October 24 at 3:15pm, when the travel to Santa Cruz for a non-conference match with UC Santa Cruz.
MATCH NOTES:
DEFENSE: The Gators have allowed just 0.69 goals a match including seven shutouts this season (last one in their 4-0 win at Humboldt State this past Friday). Their defense have allowed just one goal in the last three matches and have been led by
Chelsea Frostick,
Laura Shea,
Kelsie Bozart and Chrstina Holguin.
FIVE SHOTS: Sonoma State allowed the Gators just five shots this afternoon including one on goal by
Bianca Lowe. Lowe had three total shot attempts while
Brittany Oldham and
Chelsea Frostick each recording one apiece.
HOLGUIN: Junior goalkeeper
Christina Holguin had six saves in goal this afternoon which gives her 48 for her season. She has posted a 0.51 goals against average with 7 shutouts.
THREE MORE: The Gators will just have three matches left in the 2016 regular season. They will be off until next week when they travel to Santa Cruz on Monday, October 24 for a 3:15pm starting non-conference match with UC Santa Cruz. They will then finish of the regular season with two home CCAA matches on October 27 and 29. The Gators will host Cal State East Bay on Oct. 27 at 12:30pm and Stanislaus State on Oct. 29 at 11:30am. Prior to the match on the 29
th, the Gators will recognize their seniors.
5TH PLACE: With their 14 points, the Gators are in fifth place in the CCAA standings with two weeks left in the regular season. The top six teams at the end of the regular season on October 30 will receive a berth in the CCAA Soccer Championships. San Francisco State is one point out of fourth place (Cal State L.A.) and two points out of third place (Cal State San Bernardino). The top two teams receive a First Round Bye and the third and fourth seeds host the First Round match on November 1.
