@SFState_WBB Takes Down Hawks In Home Opener

SAN FRANCISCO – Playing in front of the friendly confines for the first time this season, the San Francisco State women's basketball team got a career performance from sophomore guard Lauryn Catching en-route to a convincing 66-58 win over visiting Holy Names on Tuesday night.

SF State (1-2) had a sluggish opening half, but went into the locker room with the halftime lead for the third-straight game.  Tonight however, the Gators kept the defensive intensity up, and a stellar performance from Catching was enough as SF State took home the eight-point win.

Catching led all scorers with 24 points, she was the only Gator in double figures.  She finished the night going 9-for-14 from the field, while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out three assists.  She also had three blocks. Her previous high was 12 points against Humboldt State last year.

For the night SF State shot 46.8 percent from the field, going 22-for-47 from the floor.  The Gators have shot over 40 percent in their first three games.  Last season, SF State shot over 40 percent only eight times all year.

Holy Names (0-1) was led by Tatiana Howard who tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Jeana Magana led the team with 13 points and seven boards.

The Gators tandem of centers, Kayla Watterson and Donae Moguel also had a big evening for SF State.  Watterson was just shy of a double-double, grabbing eight rebound and scoring seven points.  Donae finished with eight crucial points.

GAME NOTES

Coaches Quote
"It looked like the same thing that we saw this past weekend," said head coach Dennis Cox.  "We were getting out hustled early and just didn't look very physical.  About the middle of the second quarter and in the second half we just decided we were going to play tougher, and once we did that we had a better outcome.  It certainly helped that Lauryn Catching had a career-night.  Tonight was a good indication of what she can do for us."

Glass Half Empty
For the third-straight game, the Gators were on the other side of a strong rebounding performance.  The Hawks grabbed 43 rebounds, 16 on offense which led to 13 second chance points.  Holy Names finished the night with 32 points in the paint.  The Gators were much stronger in the second half, where they grabbed 24 of their 31 rebounds.

Hot From Long Range
The Gators opened the game on fire from beyond the arc.  SF State went 4-for-5 from their first four attempts from long range.  They finished the night going 6-for-16 from long range.  A 3-point bucket from the top of the key by Jasmine Black with 3:19 left in the fourth quarter ended an 0-for-9 skid and effectively put the game away.

Next Up
The Gators return to action this Friday when they host UC Merced.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
