Four @SFState_WRSTL Split Matches in Season Opening Duals

SAN LUIS OBISPO--  Four San Francisco State grapplers split their two matches in the Gators' opening duals of the 2016-17 in San Luis Obispo.  Matt Gamble and Nathan Cervantez each recorded their first victory in the Purple and Gold while Johnathon Costa and Joshua Weinberg each recorded victories in the non-conference duals.

The San Francisco State Gators started their 2016-17 season in San Luis Obispo today wrestling two non-conference against Division I opponents.  The Gators opened up with a 36-7 loss to Pac-12 member, Cal Poly.  

The Gators took a 7-0 lead after the first two matches of the dual.  Matt Gamble picked up his first win as a Gator with a 9-5 decision over the Mustangs' David Gonzalez.  The sophomore transfer recorded the final five points of the match to record the 9-5 victory at 125.  Cervantez controlled the entire match taking a 6-0 lead after the first period as he went on to take a 17-9 major decision victory over Cal Poly's Yoshi Funakoshi to give the Gators a 7-0 lead.

The Mustangs won the next five matches either by major decision, fall or technical fall to take a 23-7 lead.  At 184, the match was 4-2 after the first period with the Gators' Morris Wilner trailing Cal Poly's Sohrab Movahedi.  The Mustang took the second period 4-2 to take an 8-3 lead heading into the final period.  In the third period, Movahedi recorded a reversal and riding time while Wilner had an escape as the Mustang prevailed 11-4.  Cal Poly won the final two matches by major decision and fall to take the dual 36-7.

San Francisco State fell 39-7 to the No 27 Indiana Hoosiers as two Gator grapplers picked up their first wins of the season in Joshua Weinberg (141) and Johnathon Costa (197).  Weinberg won by a 4-3 decision over Tommy Cash.  The graduate student was down 3-1 heading into the final period when he scored an escape and a takedown to take the match 4-3.   Costa was also down heading into the third period, 2-1, but recorded an escape, takedown, four-point near fall and earned riding time to take the 10-2 major decision. 

The nationally ranked Hoosiers opened up the dual with a 12-4 major decision win by No. 16/17 Elijah Oliver over Gamble at 125.  Indiana increased its lead to 7-0 with a 9-3 decision at 133 by Garrett People over Cervantez.  The Gators (0-2) got on the board with Weinberg's win at 141.  The Hoosiers took a 33-3 lead after recording wins in the next five matches.  The Gators' Jesse Lyga almost recorded a win over Indiana's Gabe Koontz at 165, but Koontz scored four points in the final period to take the bout 4-0.  The Gators recorded their next win with Costa's major decision at 197.  The Hoosiers recorded a win by fall at 285 to take the dual 39-7. 

Later in the evening, Cal Poly defeated Indiana 19-18 as the Mustangs on the tie-breaker with more individual matches won (6-4).

The Gators will return to the mat this Saturday, November 5 at 11am, when they host the 41st Annual Purple/Gold/Alumni Scrimmage.  San Francisco State will also host the 49th Annual SFSU CC/College Open this Sunday, November 6 beginning at 9am at The Swamp at The Don Nasser Family Plaza.
