REDDING, Calif..--- The San Francisco State Gator wrestling team won their second consecutive dual with a 41-10 win over the Simpson University Redhawks this afternoon in Redding, Calif., to improve to 2-4.
Joshua Villaflor and
Dylan Furtado each picked up wins by fall to surge the Gators to their non-conference win.
The Gators took a 6-0 lead as
Matt Gamble (6-6) picked up the win at 125 by forfeit.
Nathan Cervantez (5-4) recorded a win by a 13-1 major decision over the Redhawks' Silas LaGroue. SFSU then won its next two matches by fall as Villaflor (5-4) won at the 2:10 mark at 133 for his third win by fall. Furtado won his match by fall at 4:45 to pick up his third win of the season and second by fall. The red-shirt senior is now tied for eighth with teammate
Sam Alnassiri on the Gators' all-time wins by fall with 18.
SFSU took a 25-0 lead after
Romeo Medina won by an 8-5 decision over Simpson's Ben Gacayan for his third win of the season.
Tyson Kuahine (4-4) won by a 20-2 technical fall decision to give the visitors a 30-0 lead.
The Redhawks (0-3) picked up a win at 174 as Dominican Merlo as he won by fall at 2:09 to cut the Gator lead to 30-6. SFSU increased its lead to 36-6 as
Mitchell Owens (7-6) won by forfeit at 184.
Mike Marshall (5-6) picked up a 17-0 technical fall decision at 197 as the Gators took a commanding 41-6 lead heading into the final dual. At 285, Austin Lobsinger won by a 10-1 major decision for the hosts to make the final 41-10 San Francisco State.
The Gators are off until after the New Year, when they travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to participate in the NWCA National Duals at the War County Memorial Coliseum on January 5, 2017.
