ASHLAND, Ore.--- The San Francisco State Gators' wrestling team picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the No. 6 Southern Oregon Raiders 25-15 this evening in a non-conference dual in Ashland, Ore. The Gators picked up victories at six of the 10 bouts including a pin at 6:26 at 184 by
Mitchell Owens.
The Gators started the evening with a win by fall by
Matt Gamble at 0:43 over Ian Rogers. With the win, Gamble improves to 5-6. San Francisco State (1-4) took a commanding 13-0 lead after winning by a 14-6 major decision by
Nathan Cervantez at 133 and an 11-10 win by
Joshua Weinberg at 141.
The Raiders (2-3) got on the board and cut their deficit to 13-9 as they won the next two matches. The Gators'
Dylan Furtado lost by a slim 2-0 decision to Tyler Cowger, who is second in the nation at NAIA at 149. Hunter Hodges pinned the Gators'
Landon Myers at the 3:32 mark at 157.
The Gators came back with three straight wins at 165, 174 and 184.
Tyson Kuahine won by a 8-6 decision at 165,
Jesse Lyga won by a 8-4 decsion at 174 and Owens won by fall at 6:26 to give the Gators as 25-9 lead.
Southern Oregon won the final two matches by a 7-0 decision at 197 and by a 7-3 decision at 285 to make the final 25-15 Gators.
San Francisco State will return to the mat on Saturday, December 10 at 2pm, when the Gators take on Simpson University in a non-conference match in Redding, Calif.
