BELMONT, Calif. – The SF State women's softball team fell 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at the hands of Notre Dame de Namur, the Gators came out on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel that featured two pitchers who went the distance. Ultimately, it was a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh that sealed the win for the Argonauts.
For the second game in as many days the SF State (2-1) offense struck first when
Madison Collins slid in home safely on a wild pitch to break a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning. Collins led off the fourth inning rally with a single through the right side of the infield. A pair of sacrifice bunts and the Gators were on the board when a wild pitch by Notre Dame de Namur's (1-0) starter Shelby Reali (1-0) sent a 1-0 offering to the back stop.
Gator's starter
Jenny Obbema (0-1) looked poised to earn the win, as she threw three quiet innings to begin the game. The Argonauts tied the game up in the fourth when NDNU shortstop Toni Cardoza singled up the middle, she then got into scoring position when she stole second. A fly ball to left field was deep enough to score Cardoza from third who moved up on a sacrifice bunt on the previous play.
The two sides traded scoreless fifth and sixth innings. Obbema came back out for the seventh, and like she had all game, got two easy ground balls for the first two outs. Obbema recorded an impressive five assists on lazy comebackers to the pitcher throughout the afternoon.
However, with two down Argonauts pinch hitter Taylor Haynes barreled up a pitch and sent it over the center field fence for the walk-off home run.
Obbema threw 6.2 innings, scattering five hits, two earned runs, with a pair of walks and three strike outs. Her counterpart, Reali, went the distance, throwing a three hitter over seven complete, with one earned run, a walk and four strike outs.
The Gators will return to action tomorrow when they host cross-city rival's Academy of Art for a double header starting at noon at the SF State softball field.
