Peter Reyes, the SF State Gators opened up their weekend series against ross-town foe Academy of Art with a 3-2 victory at Laney College's Field of Dreams in Oakland.
Chris Nicholson drove home
Nick Jackson with a single to left field in the top of the eighth inning with what proved to be the game-winning run.
"Ryan (Bohnet) and the relief pitching was the different tonight," said SF State head coach
Tony Schifano "I'm very proud of the guys for finding a way to win this evening."
Bohnet recorded his second no-decision in the start for the Gators (3-4) pitching 5 innings, giving up 5 hits, one run, while striking out a career high 8 and walking no one.
Dylan Bell pitched the sixth inning, giving up one hit, three runs, striking out one and walking one.
Montgomery improved to 1-0, pitching two scoreless innings striking out two. Reyes pitched a scoreless ninth en route to his second save and ninth of his career, which ties him with Takane Suzuki for fourth on the Gators' all-time career saves list.
SF State, who snapped its three-game losing streak, took a 1-0 lead in its half of the second inning. Conner Fraser reached on a two-base error to lead off the inning and scored on a double by
Joe Chedid.
Bohnet shutdown the Urban Knights' bats until Erick Luna hit a solo home run down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth inning. Academy of Art (3-5) took a 2-1 lead in its half of the sixth inning. Joseph Marchini had a lead-off double and scored on a single through the left side by Zach Trueblood. The hosts loaded the bases with two outs, but Bell induced the final out of the inning with a fly out to center.
The Gators tied the game at 2-2 on a two-out single by
Jake Faulkner which scored Chedid with the tying run. Chedid had a one-out single, went to second on a single by
Dalton Pizzuti. Pinch-hitter
Chad Thurston grounded out, but Chedid and Pizzuti advanced a base. Faulkner hit the first pitch he saw to drive in Chedid.
SF State took the lead in its half of the eighth inning. Jackson had a lead-off walk, went to second on a passed ball. The junior centerfielder advanced to third on a single by
Bryce Brooks. He then scored on a single by Nicholson, which proved to be the game-winning run.
Montgomery, who came in relief in the seventh, pitched a scoreless eighth as he retired the hosts in orddr striking out two. Reyes came in the bottom of ninth in relief of Montgomery and also retired the Urban Knights in order to preserve the 3-2 Gator win.
Brett Bovee had the no-decision in the start for Academy of Art, pitching 7 innings, giving up five hits, two runs (One earned), striking out 6 and walking two. Cody Bell (1-1) pitched two innings of relief, striking out one, walking one and giving up four hits and one run. Payton Milone and Erick Luna each had two of the Urban Knights' 8 hits.
SF State had 9 hits of which Brooks, Chedid and Pizzuti each had two.
The series will move to SF State's Maloney Field tomorrow afternoon at 1pm for the middle game of the three-game non-
conference series.
