Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | SF State Sports Information

@SFState_WBB Cannot Hold Off Late Run By Lumberjacks In Loss

SAN FRANCISCO – With 1:30 left in the fourth quarter the SF State women's basketball team was nursing a three point lead, unfortunately, in front of a packed house, Humboldt State went on a 7-0 over the final minute to defeat the Gators 61-57 Friday night at The Swamp.

SF State (5-15/3-11 CCAA) had an impressive evening on the offensive side of the ball, as well as in the rebounding category.  The Gators shot 42.6 percent on the night, going 23-for-54 from the field.  On the boards the Gators were equally as impressive, outrebounding the Lumberjacks 35-24.  On the offensive side of the glass SF State tallied 14 rebounds that led to 12 second chance points.

Leading the Gators in scoring was senior Tatsiana Dashkevich, who finished with a career-high 19 points, 12 of them coming after the break.  Laura Lawson was second on the team, she finished the night with her sixth double-double of the year, scoring a career-high 17 points, while grabbing 11 rebounds.

Humboldt State (10-11/7-7 CCAA) had four players in double figures and was led by freshman guard Amanda Kunst's 14 points.  The Jacks shot 47.7 percent from the floor and were 7-for-11 from 3-point range.

In the opening quarter stingy defense by the Gators and costly turnovers by the Jacks gave SF State an early lead.  They shot well from the floor doing most of their damage from inside the arc, however, Dashkevich banked in a 3-point bucket from the top of the key to give the Gators their first lead of the half. A steal and a bucket by Brittaney Allison with less than a minute put SF State out front 15-7 to end the first quarter.

Midway through the first quarter freshman center Kiara Ginwright broke a 31 year old school record when she tallied her 78th block of the season.  The block broke her tie with former Gator All-American Trina Easily, who set the record in the 1984-85 season.

A 9-2 run by the Jacks over the final minute of the first quart and opening two minutes of the second cut the Gators lead to one, 17-16.  During that stretch the Jacks were 3-for-4 from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.  However, the Gators weathered the storm and maintained their lead through most of the second quarter.

A late 8-4 run by the Jacks put them out front for the first time since early in the first quarter, going up 27-25.  A Lawson offensive rebound and put-back as time expired sent the two teams into the intermission, knotted up 27-27.

In the second half the Gators offense shot well, going 11-for-23 from the floor, and owned the paint, scoring 14 points inside the key.  The difference in the game was the Gators cold shooting from the free throw line.  SF State shot an uncharacteristically low 40 percent from the charity stripe, going 8-for-20.  In the second half they were just 6-for-16.

The Gators return to action tomorrow night when they host Cal Poly Pomona in a CCAA clash.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at The Swamp.
