CARSON, Calif. – The SF State softball team had their chance in game one of Friday's double header against host Cal State Dominguez Hills, but ultimately, the Toros came away with the 4-0 win. Game two of the twin billing was halted due to rain with the two teams knotted up 3-3 in the bottom of the second.
"We had two mistake pitches that they took advantage of offensively and we didn't capitalize when we had runners in scoring position," said head coach Lisa Allen. "Our defense played well, including a runner caught stealing second, and an outfield assist to second and a few great catches."
The Toros (8-16/5-12 CCAA) took the opener on the strength of a six hit complete game from starter Jamie Duran (5-8). Duran scattered six hits over seven innings, while striking out five to earn the win.
Her counterpart, Megan Clark (4-3) struggled with her command on the day. In 3.2 innings, Clark surrendered four hits, while issuing a pair of two-run home runs and allowed five walks. Her day ended in the bottom of the fourth inning after she surrendered the second of the two home runs she allowed.
The Gators (6-8/3-6 CCAA) had their opportunities against the Toros. After CSUDH jumped out to the early 2-0 lead following a two-run home run off the bat of Jasmine Ruiz in the first, the Gators put the pressure on the Toros.
Sara Higa led off the top of the second reaching first by way of a throwing error from the Toros third baseman. Mallory Cleveland followed that up crushing a ball down the right field line for her second double of the season. Unfortunately, the Gators could not capitalize with runners in second and third with no outs, and came away empty.
SF State once again had a chance to score some runs late in the game. In the top of the sixth inning Jennifer Lewis singled through the right side on a 1-1 pitch. Higa followed that up with a single to left field putting two on for the Gators. A wild pitch put runners on second and third, but the Gators once again came away empty. Duran recorded a back-to-back strike outs to end the Gators' threat.
Lindsey Cassidy took the ball for the Gators the rest of the way, she threw 2.1 innings, scattering three hits and surrendered a walk.
Game two was halted in the bottom of the second inning when heavy rains forced a delay. That game will be made up before the start of tomorrow's scheduled double header. Game two will resume at 10:00 a.m. with the game tied 3-3.
