SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State softball game came out on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel against No. 9 Cal Baptist on Tuesday afternoon at the SF State Softball Field. The Gators fell the visiting Lancers 2-0 in the opener, before falling 4-0 in the nightcap.
"Both pitchers, Lindsey and Megan, did well today on the mound and gave our team a good chance to win both games," said head coach
Lisa Allen. "Offensively we didn't make adjustments and carried our at bats from one to the next. Defensively we worked out of a few jams but also had a few errors that cost us. We have a couple days to work on our fundamentals before we get back into conference play against Stanislaus State on Friday."
SF State (9-10) collected six hits on the day, sophomore catcher
Angelica Terrel proved to be a difficult out as she went a perfect 3-for-3 in the opening game.
The Gators pitching staff was once again stellar.
Megan Clark (5-3) took the tough luck loss in the opener. She scattered two runs and six hits over seven inning while tying a season-high with five strike outs.
Cal Baptists' (18-6) game one starter Ashley Coleman (7-2) was just a little sharper, holding the Gators to four hits and no runs over seven innings while striking out five. The one batter that Coleman could not contend with was Terrel who was 3-for-3 in the game.
Sara Higa collected the Gators other hit in the opener.
The Lancers scored their two runs in the top of the fourth inning, a leadoff single and a double to left center put runners at second and third with no outs for CBU. But Clark didn't give in, a sacrifice bunt brought home the winning run and a ground ball to third plated the Lancers' second run of the inning.
In the nightcap CBU's game two starter Kellye Springstead (5-2) had a no-hitter going until the bottom of the sixth inning when
Alexis Mattos singled sharply to center field with one out. Mattos reached base twice in the game drawing a leadoff walk to start the game.
Springstead went the distance, scattering two hits, and a pair of walks while striking out seven for the win. The Gators countered with
Lindsey Cassidy who pitched very well. Cassidy went the distance allowing 10 hits, four runs, only one earned with three walks and a strike out.
In the top of the third inning the Lancers scored their first run when Cassidy got into trouble. Cal Baptist managed to load the bases with only one out, but ultimately, only came away with the lone run, scoring on a fielder's choice. CBU added three more runs in the fifth that all came after defensive miscues by SF State allowed the inning to continue.
The Gators will return to action on Friday when they begin a four game CCAA series against Stanislaus State at the SF State Softball Field. Game one of Friday's twin billing is slated for a noon first pitch.
