No. 7 Otters Hold Off Late Inning Rally in Sweep of @SFStateBaseball

SAN FRANCISCO--- The visiting seventh-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay Otters (18-3, 7-2 CCAA) held off a late-inning rally by the SF State Gators in the night cap to sweep this afternoon's doubleheader 7-0 and 8-4.  The two teams will conclude the four-game tomorrow at noon at Cal State Monterey Bay.

In the opener, the otters scored in six of the first seven innings.  They took a 1-0 lead on a two-out single by Justin Flores which drove in Will Rosado who reached on a lead-off single.  Rosado stole second and scored on Flores' two-out single. The Otters doubled their lead when Rosado had a lead-off triple and scored on a Kevin Davidson single up the middle.  They added two more runs in the fourth, one more in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 7-0 lead.

Cal State Monterey Bay's Ryan Boydston held the Gators without a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning when Nick Jackson singled down the left field line with two outs.
The Gators looked like they were going to end the shutout bid in their half of the sixth inning.  Andrew Breen had a lead-off single, went to second when Jackson walked but Boydstun induced the next Gator to fly out to right field.  Then ended the scoring threat with an inning ending double play.

SF State had another chance in its half of the seventh inning.  Chris Nicholson had a one-out single up the middle, went to second when Ryan Burke grounded out.  Then with two outs, Dalton Pizzuti walked but Boydston induced the next batter to ground out back to him on the mound.

Boydstun improved to 4-1 as he pitched 7 innings, giving up three hits while striking out three and walking three.  Nick Milone pitched the final two scoreless innings of relief while striking out six.
Rosado and Brian Bostjancic each had three of the Otters' 16 hits in the game. Rosado scored three of the visitors' 7 runs.

Matthew Hernandez (1-4) recorded the loss in the start for SF State.  Jackson Gentes came in and pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the hosts, giving up three hits, striking out two and walking one.  Nathan Pisciotta and Alex Navarrete also pitched 3.1 innings of relief for SF State.  Jackson, Breen and Nicholson each had the Gators' three hits.

Then in the night cap, Cal State Monterey Bay scored six runs in the first inning to take a 6-0 lead with Jeffrey Amaral's bases-clearing two-out double being the big hit of the inning.  Rosado opened up the inning reaching base on an error, he went to second on a two-out single by Flores.  He then scored on a Hayden Duer single.  Chris Blanton walked to load the bases for Amaral who delivered with a three-run double.  The Otters added two more runs in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.

The Gators came back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning.  Chad Thurston had a one-out infield hit, went to second on a throwing error.  He then scored on a two-out double by Myles Franklin
The Otters added an insurance run on a two-out single by Flores which brought in Rosado who lead off the inning with a double.

SF State (8-11, 2-7 CCAA) cut the Otter lead to 7-4 with a three-run fifth inning.  Alex Kotheimer, Breen and Jackson all reached base on fielding errors by the guests.  Kotheimer then scored on a passed ball still with no outs.  Thurston drove in Breen with a ground out to make it 7-3 Otters.  Jackson scored on a two-out single by Franklin to cut the deficit to 7-4.  Reliever Steven Zaharias induced the next batter to ground out to preserve the 7-4 Otter lead.

Cal State Monterey Bay came back with a run in the top of the sixth inning to increase its lead to 8-4.  Zaharias pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh innings as the Otters took the night cap 7-4.
Jorge Alvarado (1-1) picked up the win in the start, pitching four innings, giving up four hits and four runs (one earned), striking out two and walking one.  Zaharias pitched three scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and striking out two.  Flores had three of the Otters' 11 hits while Amaral had two hits.
