SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The SF State softball put on a hitting display Friday afternoon tallying 23 hits and 18 runs as the Gators took both halves of the twin billing over host Cal State San Marcos, winning game one 8-3 before running away with the nightcap 10-4.
"In game one we struggled pushing the runs across early in the game but we had a few pinch hitters come up with clutch at bats in the seventh," said head coach
Lisa Allen. "In game two our bats came out hot and scored early. Lindsey (Cassidy) and Jenny (Obbema) both did well on the mound and the defense supported them both all day. I'm proud of the way our girls responded and how well our pinch hitters did. Overall, two team wins today."
In the opener SF State (17-12/14-8 CCAA) had five players record multiple hits,
Sara Higa went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs,
Aryn Guzman and
Marisa Andrade both collected a pair of hits with a run batted in. Second baseman
Kayli Shaw had a big opener to the series, she went 1-for-3 with two RBI hitting out of the three-spot in the lineup for the first time all season.
In the circle
Jenny Obbema (4-3) battled all afternoon, going the distance for the fifth time this season. She needed 108 pitches to get the win, scattering 13 hits, three runs, all earned, with two walks and three strike outs.
Obbema surrendered a run in the bottom of the first inning when the Cougars scored on a wild pitch, the Cougars (7-25/5-19) put pressure on the Gators' starter early, but Obbema worked out of trouble in the first, second and third innings, keeping the Cougars to just the one run.
Offensively, SF State scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and busted it open with five in the seventh. Andrade got the Gators on the board knocking a single through the left side that scored
Alexis Konstantino. In the fifth it was a single through the left side by Guzman that scored
Jennifer Lewis.
In the seventh inning the Gators plated five runs, the big hits a double by Shaw that scored a pair, Higa followed that up with a single down the left field line past the Cougar third baseman that scored two more.
In the night cap the Gators offense scored early giving
Lindsey Cassidy (5-5) plenty of run support. A two-out double down the left field line by Andrade plated the Gators first three runs,
Gabby Reta followed that up with a double to left that scored Andrade giving Cassidy a 4-0 lead before she threw her first pitch.
Cassidy went the distance for the sixth time this season, she was solid early scattering the Cougars early offense, keeping them off the scoreboard for the first four innings. For the day, she went 7.0 complete, surrendering 13 hits, four runs, all earned, with three walks and two strike outs.
The Gators 7-8-9 hitters combined to go 6-for-12 with three runs scored and three runs batted in.
Chelsea Brent went 2-for-4 with her second home run of the season, a towering two-run blast down the left field line in the fourth inning to give the Gators a six run lead. In the seventh inning
Kasie Trezona hit a three-run pinch hit home run go put SF State out front 10-2.
The Gators and Cougars will conclude the series tomorrow at the CSUSM Softball Field. Game one of Saturday's twin billing will begin at 11:00 a.m.
