SAN FRANCISCO–  Cal State San Marcos scored three runs in the top of the 16
th inning to defeat the SF State Gators 6-3 in an extra-inning affair at SF State's Maloney Field.  The two teams were supposed to play a three-game series, but today's game was the only they could get in because of the inclement weather in the Bay Area this weekend.
"That was a dog fight between two teams that wanted it badly," said SF State head coach 
Tony Schifano.  "Our defensive mistakes is what ultimately was the downfall.  We will continue to work on it and make the adjustments.  I'm very happy with the effort on the mound today.  They all gave us a chance."
SF State, who has won 7 of their last 10 games, scored first in its half of the first inning.  
Nick Jackson had a lead-off single, advanced to second on a sacrifice by 
Bryce Brooks.  He then stole third and scored when the catcher's throw went over the third basemen's head to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.
Cal State San Marcos (17-18, 9-14 CCAA) tied the game at 1-1 in its half of the second inning.  Clinton Perez singled to lead off the inning, he went to second on a passed ball and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Perez scored on an Austin Ott ground out to short.
The Cougars took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning.  Hudson Bilodeau had a lead-off double, advanced to third on a bunt single by Ross Lemmel.  He then scored on a bunt single by Tyler Place to give the visitors the 2-1 lead.
SF State (16-14, 9-10 CCAA) retook the lead with a two-run fourth inning.  
Myles Franklin, who reached base safely for the 16
th straight game, had a lead-off single.  He advanced to second on a single by 
Chris Nicholson.  Franklin scored when 
Joe Chedid reached on a two-base throwing error by the Cougars to tie the game at 2-2.  Nicholson scored on a ground out by 
Carter Gambrell to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.
The score remained 3-2 Gators until the Cougar half of the eighth inning.  Jon Putnam walked and Jack Garcia pinch ran for him with one out.  Garcia advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Then Colin Dvorak walked with two outs and then Bilodeau singled to load the bases.  Ross Lemmel was hit by a pitch that brought in Garcia with the tying run with two outs. 
SF State had a chance to win the game in its half of the ninth inning.  
Connor Fraser and 
Jake Faulkner had back to back two out singles, but Hayden Weir struck out the last batter to send the game into extra innings.  The Gators had another chance to send their fans home happy in the 12
th.  Faulkner had a lead-off single, went to second on a sacrifice by 
Alex Kotheimer.  The Gator outfielder advanced to third on an infield single by Brooks, who finished 3-for-6.  The Cougars intentionally walked Franklin.  Nicholson then lined out to Tyler Place at shortstop, who made a diving catch to rob the Gators of the win.  Then the last batter struck out to keep the score tied at 3-3.
Cal State San Marcos then took a 6-3 lead in its half of the 16
th.  Riley Manquen reached on a two-base error.  He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dvorak.  Then with two outs, Lemmel walked to put Cougars on the corners.  L.A. Gamo then tripled home Manquen and Dvorak to give the visitors a 5-3 lead.  Gamo scored an insurance run on a single by Place. 
In the Gator half of the 16
th, 
Dalton Pizzuti had a lead-off walk.  Then with one out, Weir induced a game ending double play to give the Cougars the 6-3 victory.  Weir improved to 5-2 as he pitched 8.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up five hits, walking three and striking out six. Place had 6 of the Cougars' 16 hits and drove in two of their six runs.
Nathan Pisciotta (1-1) recorded the loss in relief for SF State.  He was one of nine pitchers for the Gators.  
Peter Reyes had a no-decision in the start, going 5 innings, giving up 7 hits, two runs, striking out three and walking one.  
Shane Martin pitched four scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and striking out three while 
Ulices Moreno and 
Dylan Bell also pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Gators.
The Gators will return to the diamond this Saturday, April 16
th as they begin a three-game series in La Jolla, Calif., with UC San Diego with a 2pm starting doubleheader.
