CHICO, Calif. – The SF State softball team gave the No. 14 ranked Chico State Wildcats everything they could handle, but ultimately the Wildcats took both halves of Sunday's double header, winning game one 2-1 before taking the nightcap 6-3 to win the series.
In game one the morning belonged to Obbema. Making her final start for the purple and gold she held the Wildcats to just two hits over the first five innings. She came out to start the sixth inning but after giving up a leadoff single she was pulled in favor of
Megan Clark (13-12).
The Wildcats (36-12/27-11 CCAA) scored a run in the sixth and won the game in the seventh on a bases loaded single through the right side with one out. Clark threw 1.1 inning of relief and allowed five hits, an earned run with a walk and two strike outs.
SF State (25-28/19-21 CCAA) jumped out to an early lead when
Jennifer Lewis doubled to left field that scored
Kayli Shaw from first. Shaw was on fire for the Gators on the day, going 3-for-6 on the day with two runs scored.
Brooke Langeloh (18-3) took the win in game one for the Wildcats, she threw 7.0 complete innings, scattering three hits, one unearned run with two walks and eight strike outs.
In the nightcap Clark took the ball for the Gators once again looking even the series for the Gators. The Wildcats had other ideas, scoring two in the first inning and a third run in the second against SF State's ace.
Clark lasted two innings, she surrendered three runs, all earned with five hits and two walks. Obbema came into the game for the Gators and threw four solid innings in relief. However, Chico State put the game away with a three run bottom of the fifth inning, all three runs scoring on a two-out triple to center field by Cailin Garmon (17-7).
With the Wildcats up 6-0, SF State attempted to get back into the game, scoring two in the sixth and one in the seventh inning.
Alexis Mattos and
Gabby Reta recorded RBI base hits in the sixth with Lewis knocking in the Gators' run in the seventh.
Earning the win for the Wildcats in the finale was Gilham who threw five scoreless innings, scattering one hit and a walk while striking out four. Cheyenne Sandoval was charged with three runs, two of them earned in two innings of relief.
The 25 wins for the Gators in 2016 is the most for SF State since they won 31 in the 2009 season. The Gators had an outstanding season under first year head coach
Lisa Allen, the Gators were picked to finish the year in 11
th in the CCAA in the pre-season coaches poll, they will finish the year 19-21 in the CCAA which has them squarely in sixth.
