SAN FRANCISCO--- The SF State Gators scored 11 unanswered runs to key their 11-4 come-from-behind win over the visiting University of Hawai'i-Hilo Vulcans in a non-conference game at Maloney Field.
Ryan Burke and
Logan Marston went a combined 7-for-7, scoring 5 runs and driving in six as the Gators improved to 19-20.
"Our offense woke up today and pounded some big hits," said SF State head coach
Tony Schifano.
Hawai'i-Hilo (7-31) took a 4-0 lead with a four-run second inning. Sean Nearhoof started the Vulcan second with a two-out walk. He went to third on a double by Edwin Stanberry. Nearhoof scored on a single by Edison Sakata to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Michael Jenkerson singled home Nearhoof as Hawai'i-Hilo doubled its lead to 2-0. The Vulcans took a 4-0 lead on a two-run double by Kyle Yamada.
Logan Marston drove in
Ryan Burke with the Gators' first run with a two-out double in the third. Burke reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Marston's fourth double of the season.
The Gators took a 7-4 lead with a six-run fifth inning.
Connor Fraser and
Bryce Brooks had back-to-back lead off singles. They scored on a double by Burke to left center. Burke went to second on a ground out by pinch-hitter
Nick Jackson. The Gator senior scored on a wild pitch to take the game at 4-4. Then with one-out, Marston hit a solo home run over the left field fence to give the hosts a 5-4 lead.
Mike Phelan had a lead-off single to keep the Gator inning going. Phelan advanced to third on a double by
Andrew Breen. Phelan scored when
Thomas Derry reached on a fielder's choice. Derry then stole second and Breen scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by
Jake Faulkner as the Gators increased their lead to 7-4.
SF State added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. Burke had a one-out single went to second on a single by Jackson. Marston drove home Burke with a single to left field. Jackson scored on a two-out double by Breen, his second of the game and fifth of the season. The hosts added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Brooks had a two-out triple to right center and scored on Burke's fourth hit of the game. Burke scored for the fourth time of the game on a triple to right center by Jackson as the Gators increased their lead to 11-4.
Burke finished 4-for-4 with three runs batted in while scoring four runs while Marston was 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Four Gators had a two hits apiece in Fraser, Brooks, Jackson and Breen.
Matthew Hernandez (3-4) recorded the win in relief for the Gators as he pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three hits and striking out three. Three other Gator relievers in
Dylan Bell,
Zack Zevenbergen and
Joe Chedid pitched a combined five innings of relief, giving up a combined two hits and striking out one.
The Gators will return home this weekend as they host Chico State in a four-game CCAA series beginning this Friday, April 29 at 3pm with a single nine-inning game at Maloney Field.
