SAN FRANCISCO – The SF State softball team returned home and squared off against rival Sonoma State in a midweek contest to make up the games that were rained out earlier in the year. Unfortunately for the Gators, the Seawolves got back-to-back tremendous pitching performances from its starter and the Gators lost both games of the twin billing, falling 5-0 in the opener and 3-1 in the nightcap.
"Offensively, we didn't make a quick enough adjustment," said head coach
Lisa Allen. "We need to do a better job of learning from each other. Defensively, we gave too many hitters a second chance. It's something we can work on tomorrow before going into the UCSD series."
In game one on Wednesday starter
Jenny Obbema (5-5) looked sharp early. The Gators senior starter needed just 19 pitches to get through the first two innings.
In the top of the third things unraveled quickly. Obbema loaded the bases issuing three free passes. She rebounded to get two harmless pops ups in the infield and quickly had Seawolves' cleanup hitter Jena Kaser in a quick two-strike hole. However, with the wind blowing hard to right center field, Obbema's 1-2 offering got up into the wind and was carried over the right center field fence for a grand slam.
The Seawolves (24-14/16-9 CCAA) scored another run in the fourth, scoring four runs on five hits. Obbema would go on to pitch into the fifth inning, exciting with two outs in favor of
Megan Clark. Obbema's line for the day: 5.2 innings pitched, six hits, five runs, all earned with five walks.
SF State (22-17/16-10 CCAA) had trouble figuring out Sonoma State's Amanda Llerena (16-7) who threw two complete games on the day. In game one she scattered five hits while striking out eight. She followed that up tossing a no-hit bid into the bottom of the fifth when catcher
Angelica Terrel placed a picturesque bunt in front of the catcher and pitcher for a single.
Offensively, the Gators did manage to put a rally together in the bottom of the seventh in game two.
Kayli Shaw led off the inning beating out an infield single.
Gabby Reta smacked a ball into right center field that move Shaw to third. Terrel got the Gators on the board with a deep fly ball to left field that scored Shaw.
Taking the loss for the Gators in the nightcap was Clark (10-6) who threw seven effective innings, scattering five hits, surrendering three runs, with two walks and two strike outs.
The Gators will return to action on Friday when they begin a four game CCAA series against UC San Diego starting at 1:00 p.m. at the SF State Softball Field.
