BILLINGS, Mont. – The San Francisco State Gators finished their road trip to the State of Montana with a 2-0 shutout of the Western State Colorado Mountaineers. This was the Gators' second straight 2-0 shutout victory as they improve to 2-1-1.
'"I'm proud of us for getting two important wins on the road," said San Francisco State head coach
Tracy Hamm. "They were well earned and help fuel our confidence heading into conference play.
The Gators dominated the match as they outshot their opponents 14-7 including 7-1 in shot on goal attempts. They also held a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
Christina Holguin recorded her second shutout of the season with one save in goal for the Gators. Katie Johnson-Simpson had five saves in goal for Western State Colorado (2-1-1).
San Francisco State had a chance to take the lead in the ninth minute as
Natasha Gosiaco's shot was blocked by the Mountaineer as she tried to connect on a corner kick by
Kelsey Wetzstein. Twenty minutes later, Gosiaco saw her shot on goal attempt give the Gators a 1-0 lead off a missed shot by
Autumn Fox.
Bianca Lowe looked like she was going to double the Gators' lead, but Simpson-Johnson stopped her shot in the 34
th minute from the left wing. In the 34
th minute. San Francisco State doubled its lead eight minutes later as
Kimber Lohman connected on a through ball from
Sydney Stout.
The match remained 2-0 heading into the second half as neither team recorded a shot in the final three minutes of the first half.
Western State Colorado had a chance to cut into the Gator lead in the 51
st minute of the second half, but Holguin recorded her only save for the Gators by stopping Francesca Rand's shot on goal attempt from top of the box.
"Four different players scored goals this weekend," added Hamm. "That's a huge positive for us as we have several attacking threats. Two shutouts show a shift in our mentality. Western Colorado made us fight to the end after we gave them some clear opportunities to score. We need to be better in finishing out games."
It looked like the Gators were going to increase their lead to 3-0 in the 57
th minute, but
Sierra Sagasta's shot from inside the box stopped by the Mountaineer goalkeeper. Neither team recorded a shot on goal attempt in the final 30 plus minutes as the Gators took the 2-0 non-conference victory.
San Francisco State will begin its 2016 CCAA season this week with two home matches at Cox Stadium. The Gators will host Cal State Monterey Bay this Wednesday, September 14 at 3pm. Two days later, the 24
th ranked Chico State Wildcats will come to the Bay Area to face the Gators. That match will also start at 3pm.
