@SFState_MSOC Extends Winning Streak to 5 With Thrilling 1-0 Win

SAN FRANCISCO--  Ashley Watson scored the game-winning goal with just 26 seconds left in regulation as he connected on a missed shot by Jordan Wusstig as the San Francisco State Gators defeated the Chico State Wildcats 1-0 this afternoon in a CCAA match at Cox Stadium. With the win, the Gators extended their winning streak to five which is the longest winning streak by a San Francisco State men's soccer team since 1979 when they won nine in a row.

"I am proud on how well our team played this afternoon," said San Francisco State head coach Javier Ayala-Hil. "Sometimes you have to you have to tough out wins and these last two matches were two of those times.  You have to prepare for these moments and the guys did that."

The Gator goalkeeper duo of Emmanuel Jimenez and Kyle Harmina combined on the Gators' fourth shutout of the season.  Jimenez had two saves in goal while Harmina had one and San Francisco State's defense recorded two.  Damion Lewis had six saves in goal for Chico State, who falls to 1-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.

The match was evenly played as each team recorded 16 shot attempts with the Gators recording 7 shots on goal to their visitors' five.  The hosts also held a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
Chico State had the first attempt of the match to take an early 1-0 lead, but Jimenez stopped the Wildcats' Rajaee DeLane's attempt of giving the Wildcats the lead.

San Francisco State (5-1, 2-0 CCAA) had two chances mid-way through the first half of taking the lead but Damion Lewis stopped both of Ranier Plantinos and Jonny Villeda's attempts putting the ball in the back of the net.  The Gators had one more chance to take the lead but Jesse Rodriguez' attempt was stopped in the 36th minute by Lewis.  Carter Johnson looked like he was going to give the Wildcats the lead, but his shot hit the crossbar as the match went scoreless into the half.

The Gators' leading scorer, Richard Leon, had a chance to score for the hosts be stopped by Lewis in the 69th minute. Then with 13 minutes left in the match, the Gators' defense came up big as they stopped Omar Nuno's shot on goal attempt as the match remained scoreless. Villeda had two chances for the Gators for what would've been the game-winner in the 87th minute, but Lewis stopped the first one and second one sailed high.

At the 89:34 mark of regulation, Ashley Watson connected on his first goal of the season off a rebound of Jordan Wusstig's missed shot as the Gators took the 1-0 conference home victory.

The Gators will begin a season long four-match road trip one week from tonight as they travel to Pomona to face the defending NCAA Division II National Champion Runner-ups, Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.  The two teams are scheduled for a 4:30pm starting time at Kellogg Field on Cal Poly Pomona's campus next Friday, September 23.
