SAN FRANCISCO-- The San Francisco State Gators picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the visiting William Jessup Warriors this afternoon in the final game of the San Francisco State Classic held at Cox Stadium.
Jordan Wusstig was part of both of the Gator goals, scoring the game-winner and assisting on the second goal.
"It was a very well deserved win for the team this afternoon," said San Francisco State head coach
Javier Ayala-Hil. "It always feel good when you play well and reward yourself with some goals."
The Gators had a chance in the first three minute of the match to take the 1-0 lead, but
James Aguirre's header hit the crossbar. The hosts continued to battle as
Miles Burditt's header was stopped by the Warriors' Robert Hamerlink in the 17
th minute.
William Jessup (0-2) had a chance to take the lead in the 19
th minute, but the Gators'
Emmanuel Jimenez recorded one of his three saves by stopping Christian Guzman's shot on goal attempt. The match remained scoreless until the final minutes of the half when the Gators'
Jordan Wusstig connected on a cross from
Jonny Villeda to give the hosts a 1-0 lead going into the half.
San Francisco State had several chances early in the second half to double its lead, but Burditt,
Richard Leon and
Emmanuel Serrano's shots were all stopped by the Warriors' Nick Garcia.
The Gators kept up their dominance throughout the second half. This dominance finally payed off in the final minute of the match when Leon connected on his first collegiate goal connected on a ball from Wusstig as the hosts sealed the 2-0 victory. Jimenez recorded his first shutout in goal of the season for the Gators as he collected three saves in route to the victory.
San Francisco State (1-1) outshot its guests 22-8 including 8-3 in shot on goal attempts.
"I am very happy with the way we played today," added the first-year head coach. "All the hard work we put in the preseason paid off today with a 2-0 victory."
In the first match of the day, Humboldt State and Hope International played to a 1-1 double overtime tie. The records of the four teams for the weekend were: San Francisco State 1-1, Humboldt State 1-0-1, Hope International 1-0-1 and William Jessup 0-2.
The Gators will return to the pitch this Thursday, September 8 at 4pm, when they face Holy Names University in the Golden Gate Classic at Cox Stadium. The Golden Gate Classic will be hosted by Academy of Art University but will be played at San Francisco State. Academy of Art will open up the class at 1pm on Thursday facing Stanislaus State.
