SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team posted its seventh win of the season and recorded three more points in a 2-0 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday at Cox Stadium.
"We are really starting to find our rhythm and today's result was a great example of our team's ability to adapt to the game and find success," said SF State Head Coach
Tracy Hamm. "Our defensive organization was solid. I'm proud of our team."
The Gators (7-2-1/2-1-1 CCAA) got a solid performance from both its veterans and its youth in a dominant effort against the Otters (4-4-3/2-3-1 CCAA). Freshman
Tami Kwong, who had both goals in Friday's win over Cal State East Bay, got the start and made an immediate impact. The freshman striker found the back of the net in the 16th minute on the assist by fellow freshman
Monique Ponce.
SF State nearly got a second goal by Kwong in the 64th minute on a ball that died at the goal line. Two minutes later, the Gators persisted and got their second goal of the day thanks to their senior captains.
Vanessa Penuna intercepted a pass near the midfield and chipped it ahead to
Laura Shea, who finished in stride to the far post for the score.
After an even first half, the Gators clamped down in the second half. The back line only allowed one shot while the offense went on to outshoot the Otters 15-8.
SF State sets out on the road for its next four matches, all in Southern California, before returning home to Cox Stadium on Friday, Oct. 20. vs. Cal Poly Pomona. The first 250 students in attendance at that day's matches will receive a free SF State soccer scarf.
