CARSON, Calif. — The San Francisco State men's soccer team dropped just its second match of the season on Friday in a 1-0 loss at first-place Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night at the StubHub Center.
The Gators (8-2-2/3-2-2 CCAA) battled the Toros (10-3-1/7-1-0 CCAA) to a scoreless first half and were outshot just 18-16 in the match and 7-4 shots on goal. SF State did hold a 5-1 corner kick advantage.
Cal State Dominguez Hills broke through in the 73rd minute when Leonardo Nogueira passed hard to Manuel Paez in the top of the box and Paez finished to the far left.
The Gators had the first opportunity of the night but
Richard Leon's shot in the fourth minute was saved. After freshman goalkeeper
Peter Swinkels made a save for the Gators in the 10th minute,
Ranier Plantinos had his shot in the 12th minute saved. Plantinos had three more shots before the half – two went wide and one was blocked – and finished with a team-high five for the match.
Nigus Solomon also had a pair of shots saved before the end of the half.
Swinkels made six saves for the Gators but took his first career loss. Chase Gentry made four saves and picked up the win for the Toros.
"Tonight was another good match versus a very good Dominguez Hills team. Our guys were excited to play under the lights at StubHub Center and played well," said San Francisco State Head Coach
Javier Ayala-Hil. "It came down to the wire and they came up with one at the end and in the end, we fell short. Now we're looking forward to the next match."
A tough road trip continues on Sunday, Oct. 15 when the Gators head to No. 25-ranked Cal State LA. The two teams are currently tied for sixth place with 11 points. Sunday should play a critical role in the journey to the CCAA Championships as the top six teams qualify. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. Then, the Gators return home on Friday, Oct. 20 at 2:30 p.m. The first 250 students at that day's doubleheader will receive a free SF State soccer scarf.
