SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State men's soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season on Friday in a 2-0 loss to first-place Cal Poly Pomona.
Five consecutive Broncos (13-3-0/9-2-0) corner kicks set the tone early, as the Broncos were unrelenting in their attack. It paid off for them in the 26th minute. Jose Garcia's shot was saved by SF State goalkeeper
Peter Swinkels but Sergio Monsi came up with the rebound. Monsi, who entered the week third in NCAA Division II, netted his 18th goal of the season from the left side, finishing to to the far post.
In the 52nd minute, Dante Medina doubled the Broncos lead. Monsi passed from the right side over to Medina, who caught Swinkels off balance.
The closest attempt for the Gators (8-4-2/3-4-2 CCAA) came in the 68th minute. Senior
Ranier Plantinos flew into the box and headed the ball but it slammed off the crossbar and out of bounds. Earlier, in the 60th minute,
Richard Leon's shot was smothered by CPP goalkeeper Jason Trejos.
Carlos Trujeque leal's shot in the 75th minute was saved. Leon had another shot in the 82nd minute from the top of the box that was saved.
With three matches to go, SF State is in eighth place with 11 points. The Gators will look to pick up three points with a win on Sunday, Oct. 22 when they host fifth-place Cal State San Bernardino. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at
