SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State women's soccer team ended its season with a goal in the final seconds by senior
Laura Shea en route to a 1-0 upset of No. 19 Sonoma State on Saturday at Cox Stadium.
Fittingly, SF State (9-5-3/4-4-3 CCAA) won on the Shea header off of the assist by fellow senior
Bianca Lowe. Lowe served the ball in from just outside of the box and Shea spun in the header to the near post.
Sonoma State (12-2-1/6-2-1 CCAA) outshot the Gators 26-15 but
Christina Holguin put on a clinic with a career-best 15 saves.
A key point came in the 84th minute. A Gators handball in the box loomed large until Holguin turned back the resulting penalty kick by Sara Van Wagoner. The freshman's attempt didn't have much on it and Holguin predicted correctly to make the diving stop.
Stanislaus State won its match on Saturday so the Gators' season comes to end, falling just short of the CCAA Championships. Before the match, the Gators honored its senior class:
Liz Borders, Holguin, Lowe,
Vanessa Penuna,
Sierra Sagasta, and Shea.
