SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Fans saw a first glimpse of the 2017-18 San Francisco State women's basketball team on Monday night in a 74-39 exhibition loss at Santa Clara.
"I was actually happy with our first half. I thought we played well defensively. The second half was a bit of a different story," said Head Coach Kristen Danella, in her first season at the helm of the Gators. "We need to take care of the ball and we need to shoot the ball better. There's a lot of positives to take away from today. I know the scoreboard showed a little differently but I was pleased and we'll get ready for Monday."
The Division I Broncos used their size to their advantage. They jumped out to a 6-0 run but the Gators countered with the next eight points, on two three-pointers from
Rachel Iozzia and a jumper by
Laura Lawson. The Broncos answered with an eight-point run. Iozzia's third three of the quarter stopped the bleeding but a buzzer-beater at the other end sent the Gators into the second quarter down 17-11.
Iozzia's fourth shot was a buzzer-beater three but Santa Clara made 24 defensive stops in the first half and grew the halftime lead to 30-19. The Gators were outscored 21-10 in the 23-10 in the third and fourth quarters.
Emily Wolph, who led the Broncos a season ago with 12.8 points per game, had 10 by the end of the first half and finished with a game-high 19 points. The Broncos had three others in double digits: Morgan McGwire (16 points), Dru Toleafoa (11 points), and Tamia Braggs (10 points).
The Broncos shot 50 percent (27-of-54) as a team while the Gators were limited to 23.1 percent (16-of-51). The Gators also attempted four free throw attempts while they sent the Broncos to the charity stripe 15 times.
Iozzia's team high 12 points for the Gators all came in the first half.
Jhaina Stephens added 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and
Laura Lawson finished with six points on 3-of-3 shooting.
In one week, on Monday, Nov. 13, the Gators have one more exhibition when Southern Oregon (NAIA) visits San Francisco. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. Live video and stats will be available at
