WBB | Gators Can’t Overcome Toros, Drop Home Contest 91-76

Stephens drops 31 points and 14 rebounds and Iozzia adds eleven in the loss

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's basketball team wrapped up its home stand on Saturday as they fell to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 91-76.

The Gators shot 45 percent (29-of-64) on the night, however the Toros converted 50 percent (35-of-70) from the field including 30 percent (7-of-23) from deep.

Jhaina Stephens continued her hot streak with her fourth-consecutive double-double with a season-high 31 points and 14 boards. Rachel Iozzia added eleven points and five assists while Tyiteyana Jefferson dropped eleven and grabbed six rebounds. Stephens' 30+ point performance was the first time since the 2013-14 campaign that a Gator has scored 30 or more points.

Stephens got the Gators (2-4/0-3 CCAA) on the board on a nice move in the paint for the layup off a pass from Jefferson in the early going. Stephens would score six-straight points to tie and then give SF State its first lead of the evening at 10-8 with just over four to go in the first quarter. With a 14-10 advantage, Iozzia got her first points on the night on a deep three from the right side to make it a seven-point contest. However, the Toros (6-3/4-0 CCAA) answered right back on Heaven Holmes' triple to bring the score to 17-13. Kaleigh Pugh closed out the quarter with a free throw to give the hosts a 20-13 lead after the first ten minutes.

Dominguez Hills scored five to begin the second quarter to inch closer. Iozzia drained another three at the six-minute mark off an assist from Jefferson to put the Gators up 25-20. Nautica Morrow scored three-straight points to bring the Toros within two at just over three to go, and Zhane Carter tied it at 26-all as the visitors battled back. Stephens hit a jumper in the closing seconds to cut into the deficit and the Toros carried a 34-31 lead into halftime.

Taylor Farris opened up the second half with a quick layup and a free throw to put the Toros up 37-31. Jefferson answered with a tough bucket to start the Gator scoring and Laura Lawson followed the next possession with a layup of her own to make it a three-point game. The Toros continued to roll, pushing their lead to 17 with three-and-a-half to go. The Gators battled back with three-straight buckets from Stephens to make it 59-48.

The visitors pushed the score to 72-50 to open up the fourth quarter. Erika Nilsen dropped one from beyond the arc with seven to go for her first points of the contest, and Jacqueline Moss also converted from deep with five minutes to go to make it 76-61. However, the Toro sharp shooting continued as Dominguez Hills went on to seal the victory 91-76 and remain perfect in conference play.
