OAKLAND, Calif. — The weather finally cleared enough for the San Francisco State baseball team to play its first game of the 2017 season. The Gators came ready to play and topped Academy of Art 2-1.
SF State's offense wasted no time scoring. Shortstop
Sam Schmidt singled to right center Brett Bovee threw the ball away on a sacrifice bunt by
Zac Neumann. Cleanoff hitter
Myles Franklin singled to center. His hit was misplayed and allowed Schmidt to score.
Bryce Brooks took the second pitch he saw and notched a two-out single that plated Neumann.
The pair of unearned runs were all that senior pitcher
Ryan Bohnet needed. The rightly went six strong with five strikeouts en route to the win. The righty allowed a double in the first inning and didn't allow another hit until the sixth inning. ART U's lone run of the day was charged to sophomore lefty
Nathan Pisciotta, who worked one inning. Senior right-hander
Brent Montgomery picked up the save and had one strikeout in two innings of work.
Brooks doubled down the left field line in the third and finished the day 2-for-4. Center fielder
Chris Hayman also had a pair of hits, including a full-count double in the seventh inning.
