SAN FRANCISCO – Trailing by as much as 14 points in the second half, the San Francisco State women's basketball team made it two wins in a row with a thrilling 55-54 win over visiting Cal State L.A. on Saturday night.
Kaitlin DaDalt had the game of her life, scoring a career-high and game-high 25 points. She also grabbed six rebounds and recorded three steals. Seniors
Donae Moguel and
Felicia Villarruel came up huge on Senior Night as well. Moguel recorded her second-straight double-double and eighth of the year, scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. Villarruel scored seven points, going 2-for-5 from 3-point range.
In the opening quarter, SF State (4-21/2-16 CCAA) started 0-for-6 from the field. The Golden Eagles opened the game on an 8-0 run and held the Gators scoreless until a DaDalt layup with 2:18 into the period got the Gators on the board. Villarruel hit an open three in corner to cut the deficit to six with less than a minute in the quarter where the score would remain.
In the second quarter, the Gators offense gained some momentum.
Imani Smith hit a jumper to cut the deficit to four early, a pair of three point buckets late by
Jasmine Black and Moguel cut the deficit to three late. The Golden Eagles went into the break up five when they hit a layup with less than 30 seconds in the half.
The Gators shot 31 percent from the floor in the first half, going 9-for-29, from 3-point range they were 3-for-10. DaDalt provided a bulk of the Gators offense, scoring eight points, six of them coming in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, a pair of Black free throws got the Gators going, following that, CSULA went on a 11-3 run to take a 39-28 lead. During that stretch, the Gators were just 1-for-3 from the field and committed three turnovers that led to Golden Eagle buckets.
A 3-point bucket by CSULA's Samantha Lee put the Golden Eagles up 14, 42-28, their largest lead of the evening. Lee finished with a team-high 17 points. From there, the Gators took control. SF State closed the game, going on a massive 27-11 run. Villarruel started the Gator offensive explosion with a 3-point field goal from the corner.
The fourth quarter began with Cal State L.A. (14-13/11-8 CCAA) clinging to a 10-point lead. The Gators finished off game with an 18-6 run. DaDalt scored 10 points during the stretch, while the Gator's defense held CSULA to a 2-for-10 shooting performance.
The Golden Eagles led the congest for 36:03 minutes of the game before SF State captured the lead. A pair of free throws by Smith gave the Gators a 52-51 lead midway through the fourth, their first lead of the evening.
The Gators will wrap up the season on the road, next week they travel to Cal Poly Pomona to take on the Broncos on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
