WBB | Gators Play Wildcats Tough, Fall Late

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's basketball team never trailed by more than eight points, and twice tied the game up.  However, the Gators could not get that go ahead bucket and fell to visiting Chico State 55-48 on Saturday evening at the Swamp.

For the third consecutive game, senior center Donae Moguel recorded a double-double.  She finished with a team-high 12 points, while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds. She also added three blocks.

Moguel has grabbed eight more rebounds in eight of the last nine contests.  For the year she now has 164 rebounds on the season which is fourth in the CCAA.

Joining Moguel in double figures was sophomore Lauryn Catching.  Catching scored 12 points, going 5-for-12 from the floor.  She also had four rebounds and two assists.  As a team, SF State shot 33.3 percent from the field, going 19-for-57 from the floor.  From 3-point range, the Gators were 4-for-23.

Kaitlin DaDalt got the Gators (2-19/0-14 CCAA) on the board first when she hit a three in the corner.  The Wildcats (14-7/9-6 CCAA) responded quickly, going on an 11-2 run over the remainder of the opening period.  The Gators got a second 3-point bucket from DaDalt to cut the deficit to three, 11-8 to end the first quarter.  The two sides remained close, with the Wildcats going into the intermission up four, 28-24.

In the second half, SF State leaned heavily on Catching, who scored eight of her 12 points after the break.  With 4:13 in the third quarter Erika Nilsen hit a 3-point bucket at the top of the key that tied the game up for the final time.  The Wildcats continued to feed Kayla Taylor who scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the second half, seven coming in the final seven minutes of the contest.

The Gators return to action next Friday, February 8 when they travel to Seaside, Calif., to take on Cal State Monterey Bay.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
