SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team fell 6-2 to No. 10 UC San Diego on Thursday in CCAA action.
The Gators (4-17/2-11) matched up with first-place UC San Diego (16-4/8-2 CCAA) but the Gators' lone error of the day proved costly. With the game tied 2-2, Tim White led off the third inning by reaching on an error. SF State starter
Dillon Houser (0-5) worked a pair of fielder's choices that would have ended the inning but a wild pitch and Jack Larsen doubled home a run to put the Tritons back in front. The Gators intentionally walked Hearn to set up a force at all three bases but Alex Eliopulos' RBI single doubled the lead instead. Houser got out of the inning with the bases loaded but the damage was done.
UC San Diego got the early jump with a pair of runs in the second. SF State responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Chris Hayman shot one just under the diving shortstop's glove that scored
Johnny Juarez from third. Second baseman
Zac Neumann sent an opposite-field single to right field that loaded the bases.
Jacob Lopez drilled a shot off of the pitcher's glove and shortstop Tyler Howsley couldn't come up with the ball cleanly. That allowed
Trevor Greenley, who reached on a fielder's choice, to score and tied the game at 2-2. However, the Gators left the bases loaded.
Lefty
Cy Vojak relieved Houser in the seventh and faced the minimum thanks to a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play. Vojak pitched a scoreless eighth but was charged with two of runs in the ninth. The Tritons used a one-out RBI single and a sacrifice fly to add to the lead.
Preston Mott (6-0) lasted five innings for the Tritons and allowed all seven Gators hits. Kyle Goodbrand did not allow a hit in three and two thirds innings of relief.
Juarez raised his batting average 73 points to .258 with a 3-for-4 day at the dish that included a double and a run. Lopez added a pair of hits to go with a walk and an RBI.
