SB | Gators Use Lights Out Pitching and Timely Hitting to Take Series

TURLOCK, Calif. – Strong pitching performances from Aryn Guzman and Lindsey Cassidy and timely hitting throughout the lineup propelled the Gators to a pair of Saturday afternoon wins to take the series against host Stanislaus State.  The Gators ran away with game one 11-0 before stealing the nightcap 4-2.

SF State (11-17/10-14 CCAA) held Stanislaus State (10-14/8-12 CCAA) to two runs over 14 innings of work.  Meanwhile, the Gators offense scored 15 runs on 21 hits.

In game one, in the top of the first inning the Gators offense wasted no time getting the early lead.  Alexis Mattos reached safely on a fielder's choice and then stole second.  Celeste Adriano extended her hitting-streak to 15-games with a double down the left field line on a 1-2 count that scored Mattos from second.  One batter later, Sarah Higa traded places with Adriano with a double to right field.  Gabby Reta knocked in the third run of the game with a single to center that scored Higa.

With a three run lead early, Aryn Guzman (2-0) went to work pounding the strike zone.  The senior recorded three quick outs in the first and never looked back, tossing a five-hit complete game shutout on 89 pitches.  Guzman held the Warriors 2-for-11 with runners on base, and 2-for-7 with two outs.

The Gators scored two more runs in the second, and erupted for six runs in the top of the seventh.  SF State finished game one with 11 runs on 12 hits.  Higa and Delanie Chrisman came through with three RBI games apiece.  Guzman also tallied two hits of her own.

In the nightcap, Stanislaus State's starter Kristin Borst did her job, and kept the Gators scoreless through 6.1 innings. However, in the top of the seventh with one out the Gators turned the tide.

Kasie Trezona started the rally, drawing a one out walk.  Madison Collins singled down the left field line to put two on for Delanie Chrisman.  On a 2-1 offering, Chrisman launched a ball over the left field fence for her first career home run too give SF State a 3-2 lead.

The rally didn't end there.  With one out, Guzman, Mattos and Adriano all singled to load the bases for Higa who hit a ball to deep center field to score Guzman for the insurance run.

Lindsey Cassidy (4-8) pitched around a two-out double and a walk to strand runners at second and third to close out the game for the win.  Her line for the afternoon, 7.0 innings pitched, two runs, one earned, scattering five hits, five walks with three strike outs.

Cassidy was strongest with the Warriors on base.  She held Stanislaus State to 2-for-13 with runners on, and 1-for-8 with two outs.

Guzman had a big day at the dish, going 2-for-4 to complete a four-hit day. Collins and Adriano also had multiple hit games.  Adriano finished game two going 2-for-3 to extend her hitting streak to 16 games.

The Gators return home to host Notre Dame de Namur for a doubleheader on Thursday, March 23 starting at noon.
