BB | Crooked innings the difference in doubleheader split vs. SSU

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco State baseball team split its non-conference doubleheader versus Sonoma State on Wednesday at Maloney Field. The Gators took game one 12-5 and dropped the seven-inning nightcap 10-8.

The Gators (7-21) matched their largest margin of victory in game one, thanks in large part to a six-run bottom of the second. Down 3-0, the Gators got their first run back without the benefit of a hit. The first three batters reached via walk or hit by pitch, and Dalton Pizzuti scored from third on a wild pitch. Chris Nicholson tied the game on a full-count double to left center field that brought home Jack Harris and Myles Franklin. Zac Neumann kept things going with a bunt single and Jackson Kritsch gave the Gators the lead with a single through the right side. Bryce Brooks' sacrifice fly made it 5-3 and Kritsch scored on a balk.

Jordan Yrastorza got a strike him out, throw him out, then got Isaiah Engman swinging for a scoreless third inning of work and tossed a scoreless fourth inning to pick up his first win of the season.

In the bottom half of the fourth, Nicholson sent a fly ball to right field and Jack Harris survived the collision at the plate for the Gators' seventh run. Neumann shot a double down the left field line to make it 8-3.

The Seawolves trimmed two runs off the lead in the top half of the fifth but the Gators got both runs back on RBIs from Nicholson and Jordan Abernathy in the bottom of the fifth and sixth. Chris Hayman and Mike Phelan both came through with pinch-hit RBIs in the eighth to make it 11-5. Marco Gonzales, Cy Vojak, and Cole Lang combined for a scoreless final three innings.

An eight-run fourth inning was the difference for the Seawolves in game two. SSU tallied eight hits in the inning but a pair of SF State errors proved costly and opened the door for six unearned runs.

Garrett Ciuk allowed leadoff walks to begin the game but a pair of fielder's choices helped limit the damage to one run. The Gators answered in the bottom half of the inning with Jacob Lopez's RBI groundout that brought home leadoff batter Chris Hayman. Back-to-back singles started off the bottom of the second and Mike Phelan later scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch.

SSU added another run in the fifth but Johnny Juarez got a run back for the Gators with his hard-hit single down the third base line. Cole Lang's pinch-hit infield single made it 10-4 and Nicholson's pinch-hit double to left field wall cleared the bases, which cut the Seawolves lead to 10-7.

Pinch hitter Dalton Pizzuti, who reached on an RBI single through the left side, represented the tying run in the sixth. However, a pair of ground balls to shortstop cut the rally short. Robbie Carling drew a two-out walk in the seventh and brought up the tying run yet again. However, Abernathy, pinch hitting, flew out to right field to end it.
