TURLOCK, Calif. – The San Francisco State softball team played comeback kids in game one and outpitched their opponent in game two to take both halves of Saturday's double header, winning 5-4 over Montana State-Billings to begin the day before taking down Central Washington 4-1.
SF State (15-21) received two strong pitching performances from its starting rotation.
Megan Clark (7-12) pitched seven strong to begin the contest and shut the door down on the Yellowjackets (12-22) after they jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
In the nightcap,
Aryn Guzman (4-0) was brilliant as she held Central Washington (22-6) to one run over seven innings in a stellar pitching performance.
In the opener, MSUB jumped out to the early 3-0 lead. The Yellowjackets scored two runs in the first and a run in the third, both coming from the bat of MSUB's designated player Megan Dettling. Dettling hit a two-run home run in first and an RBI single in the third.
In the fourth, the Gators got on the board. Clark helped her own cause with an RBI single up the middle that scored
Celeste Adriano from third.
An inning later, the Gators took the lead, scoring three runs.
Sara Higa and
Gabby Reta provided the thunder recording RBI singles, both coming with two outs.
The Yellowjackets briefly tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth scoring their final run. SF State took the lead for good in the top of the sixth.
Kasie Trezona led off the inning with a double to left center, she eventually scored in the sacrifice bunt by
Delanie Chrisman.
Clark shut the door on MSUB in the sixth and seventh to earn her seventh win of the season. Clark's line: seven innings pitched, eight hits allowed, four earned runs, with two walks and four strike outs.
In the nightcap, the Gators and Wildcats were broiled in a pitcher's duel before the Gators broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs on four hits, with the help of three errors.
Guzman scored the game's first run on a throwing error by the catcher on a double steal attempt. The Gator's other runs were scored on an error on a sacrifice bunt by Reta that scored two and an RBI single by Trezona.
Guzman, held the Wildcats quiet for 6.2 innings before they scored a run on a two-out single in the top of the sixth inning. Guzman got out of the inning without allowing further damage and made quick work of CWU in the top of the seventh for her fourth win of the season.
Guzman's line: 7.0 innings pitched, scattering six hits, one earned run, with three walks and four strike outs.
The Gators return to action tomorrow morning when they take on Simon Fraser at 9:00 a.m., they will wrap up the tournament against Western Oregon at 12:30 p.m.
